Presidential hopeful Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) is pressing President Bush to call a meeting with several congressional committees to discuss policy towards China in the aftermath of Beijings refusal to allow a Navy aircraft carrier and its accompanying ships to dock in Hong Kong last week.
Hunter, the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, asked Bush to convene a meeting as soon as possible with the chairmen and ranking members of Armed Services and the House panels on Intelligence, Foreign Affairs and Defense Appropriations.
In a letter to Bush on Thursday, Hunter also asked the administration to invest as part of the upcoming fiscal 2009 budget in technologies to ensure our military remains prepared to meet the challenges that we will face with a China that has become more aggressive militarily.
Hunter, who is not seeking reelection to Congress next year, called for an increased investment in submarine production, the development of modem deep strike platforms, including new bomber aircraft, and enhanced electronic warfare systems.
The Pentagon issued a formal protest to China's military on Wednesday over its refusal to allow the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier strike group to dock in Hong Kong over the Thanksgiving holiday. Military families flew to Hong Kong on their own expense to meet their family members, but never had a chance to do so. The Pentagons protest was not a diplomatic communication, but was issued as part of U.S.-China military exchanges, according to Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell.
Chinas visiting foreign minister told Bush that the incident was the result of a misunderstanding.
Two days before the Chinese denied access to the Kitty Hawk, Hunter said, China also refused to allow two U.S. Navy minesweepers seeking refuge from a storm to make port in Hong Kong, leaving them no option but to face the dangerous weather in the open sea.
As these two incidents clearly demonstrate, China is embarking on a new more confrontational relationship with the U.S. and we need to be prepared, Hunter wrote on Thursday.

Darn, do we ever need Duncan Hunter as POTUS!
It dawned on my today, why the “free traders” are so bellicose whenever challenged on selling out America.
It’s not just that they’re greedballs, who see their money trees threatened by fair trade policies.
They deep down know they’re selling out America. As long as they can pretend that’s somehow honorable because it’s “free”, then late at night when they’re alone with their thoughts — they needn’t face their own treachery, to their own country.
You knocked that one out of the park. Let’s just hope we can get a majority of apathetic Americans to understand that.
Exactly, when did this “free trade” become a conservative issue or asset? What the hell is free about it? Other countries are free to crap on us at will and have our free-traders tells us what a wonderful thing it is? Is that how and where the “free” part comes in?
The truth is they don’t want to rock the boat because their boat is a 90 ft. yacht. The free-traders will debate me and tell me how wonderful things are, but, they will never trade with me. I get to be China and they get to be the USA, and we trade. If it is good for America then it must be good for them, right?
An outright lie...!
China: Navy Spat Not a Misunderstanding (Kitty Hawk was about the Dalai Lama)
Duncan Hunter leads. No other candidate has the strength to lead as Hunter does. Hunter has been the only one to bring attention to our foolishness and what the trade is setting us up for.

Tidbit for all. 3Com is the company responsible for providing the firewalls and security software to the Pentagon. Lets keep that in mind.

Thank you Cal. Timely, as usual
Hunter is all for real free trade. He is unequivocally opposed to the stupid systems we have in place that ensure the loss of not only manufacturing jobs and the associated technology, but the definitive loss of US sovereignty.
