FORT SMITH, Ark. -- An e-mail written by an Arkansas lawmaker is raising eyebrows, causing some to call state Sen. Denny Altes a racist. In an e-mail to former Fort Smith Mayor Bill Vines, Altes wrote that he is in favor of deporting illegal immigrants, comparing current immigration issues to issues the Founding Fathers had with black people.
However, Altes is standing by his remarks, saying this argument is historical, not racial.
In the e-mail, Altes wrote: "I am for sending the illegals back, but we know that is impossible."
He later wrote: "Sure, we are being overrun, but we are being out-populated by the blacks also."
Altes also wrote that, "We are where we were with the black folks after the Revolutionary War."
However, Altes said he is not a racist.
"I have friends of every color and creed," he said.

And here is an update from AP: Ark. lawmaker apologizes for e-mail on immigrants, blacks
Sounds like the RATS are doing a “Trent Lott” on the man ‘cause he’s a pub.
He’s right on illegals, but what on earth is he going on about regarding Blacks ?
D or R
Not that I need to guess.
A fifth of whiskey and a keyboard are sometimes a dangerous combination. (sarcasm)(?)
He’s a Republican.
I would like to know who the SOB or Whore is that called him a racist?
I believe this is factually incorrect, as well as being politically stupid.
Blacks are not increasing as a percentage of the population, and in fact were passed by Hispanics a couple years ago as the largest minority group.
I read the e-mail. Yep, he’s racist.
I would like to know who the SOB or Whore is that called him a racist?
Some here are and if he is not a racist he certainly made a huge bad judgement.
While I won't criticize him too harshly for having that thought, it was a pretty stupid thing to put to print, wasn't it?
Some wanted to send the blacks back to Africa. Many blacks thought it was a good idea, like Marcus Garvey. Some of the Founders even supported the creation of Liberia as a colony for American blacks. It didn’t work out too well.
Definitely. He must have thought it did not sound as bad as it did. I mean I have a hard time believing that someone would purposefully type an e-mail like this especially a politician.
Peckerwoods. They walk among us.
