Boston, MA – David A. Keene, Chairman of the American Conservative Union and long time Republican strategist, today endorsed the presidential candidacy of former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

In a statement issued today, Keene said that "while I certainly can't pretend to speak for all or even most conservatives, the road that led me here today is one that many conservatives find themselves on and it is my hope that they will end up where I am today – convinced that Mitt Romney represents our best hope for 2008.

“As this race began, I intended to remain neutral both because there was no conservative consensus candidate and because I know and admire several of those running for the Republican nomination who I believe could win next fall.

“In recent months, however, Governor Romney has emerged as the single candidate most worthy of conservative support. That's why I'm endorsing him and intend to spend as much time as possible in the weeks ahead convincing my fellow conservatives that if we are serious about electing a conservative president in 2008, it's time to unite behind his candidacy.”

Welcoming today’s announcement, Governor Romney said, “I am proud that David Keene has decided to join our campaign for conservative change that strengthens our military, economy and families. As Chairman of the American Conservative Union, he has greatly advanced the conservative movement. I look forward to working with him as our campaign moves forward.”

Background On David A. Keene:

David A. Keene Has Been The Chairman Of The American Conservative Union Since December 1984. Keene, a major national conservative spokesman since the seventies, has worked in the White House and the Senate, writes a weekly opinion column for The Hill and his articles have appeared in National Review, Human Events and the American Spectator. He has held senior positions in the past presidential campaigns of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and former Kansas Senator Bob Dole.

This endorsement reveals that Keene puts good hair liberalism over Conservative principles. I’d urge all dues-paying members of the ACU to cancel their subscriptions. This is a disgusting abomination.

I do not know if he is a fraud or not, I do not even know who he is.

It always amazes me these organization on both sides come out of the woodwork at election time and half the time know one even knows who they are.

A good endorsement for Mitt. Some conservatives won’t buy the argument, but this gives credence and support to those who do. Don’t know if it will convince anybody, but it should help those who feel intimidated or threatened into not supporting Mitt.

Remembering that this endorsement is from the man who CHAIRS the organization, and NOT the organization, here is their web page: American Conservative Union

This is the group that ranks politicians as to their political leanings, the ones we use to figure out how conservative candidates are.

Again, the endorsement was from the man who chairs the group, NOT the group itself. But this is not some fly-by-night group, it is a well-respected and very old organization.

The organization does endorse candidates, but it has not endorsed a candidate in the presidential election.

I thought you were spelling Fred there for a minute.

That would have been better, as it’s always good to be able to cheer for your candidate rather than have to attack all the others.

BTW, nobody should be punishing an organization because of the action of their president.

And while your opinion no doubt is very important to you, I’m betting that Keene’s opinion of Romney is probably just a little bit more important to the body of conservatives who have cheered the ACU and it’s work for the last few decades.

And they probably wouldn’t be too enthusiastic about your suggestion to destroy the ACU.

McFred

As in co-author of CFR and... a guy who professes to be pro-life while having lived a promiscuous lifestyle. Or, does the “new” conservatism mean getting pregnant is the woman’s problem?

Nope, spelling FRAUD, as in Precious Willard Romney and David Keene.

As was pointed out in another thread, Keene has given money to the RINO apostate Arlen Specter, so he most certainly is no friend to Conservatives.

Pressure should be brought immediately to bear upon the ACU to call for his dismissal. This is a Conservative organization, not a liberal one.

As a Mittwitt disciple, you have no credibility to be criticizing any Conservative on his pro-life principles. Your boy would hamburgerize a fetus on television if that would get him the Presidency.

Actually, it comes much closer to spelling FRED. Just remove the U and A in the middle, add an E for ‘energyless’ or ‘exhausted’ - take your pick - and you have FRED!

EV: You hit the nail on the head. Dave Keene is primarily interested in Dave Keene. Watch Romney’s campaign reports for evidence of payments to Keene or watch ACU for receipt of funds from Romney. Keene took a lot of money to support Bush the Elder over Ronaldus Maximus. That alone should have finished Keene but somehow the ACU has had him as chairman for nearly a quarter century. Exactly what has ACU accomplished in those years? Zero. Zip. Nada. ACU used to be run by giants like John Ashbrook or M. Stanton Evans. Now ACU is nothing special, just another fund raising engine for the wages and benefits and perks of its proprietors, some of whom were once effectively conservative but that was long ago.

Many, or most, or all, of the money trails will not lead directly from Romney or his campaign. Those would go to certain prominent, wealthy, supporters of his.

For example, you might want to check out Demoss family connections.
