When our son comes over with the beag we have to lock up the garbage and move food back from the counter edges. She is well behaved otherwise but food distracts her.

We discovered that my second dog's additional body length means that she can get six inches further back on the countertop than my first dog . . .
I caught her decimating the cat's food, which my son had left too close to the counter edge after he refilled it.
Once she learns that she can jump over the baby gate (she has already figured out how to worm her way under it) I think we're doomed . . .

Our dog is well behaved - he's also very smart - food-based intelligence. He knows better than to get up on the counters for food, so he stands on his hind legs and sort of hovers over the counter like a giant furry hummingbird. As big as he is - 100 pounds or so - he never touches the counter, and to him, that isn't breaking the rules.
