Toddler killed during discipline over manners, lawyer says
Houston Chronicle ^ | November 28, 2007 | LIZ AUSTIN PETERSON, Associated Press Writer

HOUSTON — The toddler believed to be the girl whose body was found in Galveston Bay was beaten to death by her stepfather who lost control because she failed to say "please" and "yes sir," an attorney for the girl's mother said Wednesday.

Attorney Tommy Stickler Jr. also confirmed Wednesday that the girl's mother, Kimberly Dawn Trenor, is pregnant. Her pregnancy was first reported by the Houston Chronicle.

The fatal beating happened after Royce Clyde Zeigler II stayed home from work to make sure his wife was following the discpline plan he'd established for her daughter, 2-year-old Riley Ann Sawyers, Stickler said.

Riley is believed to be the girl dubbed "Baby Grace," whose body was found by a fisherman in a plastic box floating in Galveston Bay last month. The girl's identity was a mystery for weeks, and authorities are still awaiting the results of a DNA test on the body to prove she is Riley.

Police arrested Zeigler, 24, and Trenor, 19, on Saturday, after Trenor told police she and her husband had killed the girl in July and hid her body in a shed before dumping it in the bay.

Why a wooden spoon? Isn’t a hand good enough for such small children? I got hit with a wooden spoon when I was a kid and it was abuse. My family was the classic case of abusive. From the time we were little until I finally said enough and got the he11 out of there. I can remember finally taking that wooden spoon & breaking it. I think its ok to smack/spank a child but hand only! Belt never! I know if DYFS ever came into my house & found I was using a spoon on children that young my children would be taken away asap. I guess if you have no problem with it thats fine but I would check & see if its legal in your state.

Prayers for Riley Ann Sawyers & the hope those two monsters get jail house justice. I hope this baby that is expected is taken away asap & given up for adoption. These two need the death penalty IMHO.

We spank (NEVER IN ANGER)

That is the key. Never in anger. Discipline should be about the child's needs, not yours, and sometimes it isn't the kid who needs a time out.

The brute force that an adult has oven a child is so overwhelming that it must be TOTALLY under control, and always done out of love.

Yes. If you have a child who requires radical steps to bring him under control, then learn to pin, to immobilize. To wrap in a bear hug. Hitting is a drastic last resort, and only for an imminent danger to self or other.

“The fatal beating happened “... doesn’t give the fullness of truth to what happened.

According to an article I read with their confessions.

They BOTH beat her with leather straps.
Then they held her head under water in the tub.
Then he grabbed her by her hair, throwing her across the room, slamming her head into the floor.

Then they went to WALMART and bought a plastic container, stuffed her body in it, and hid it in a shed for two months.

Then they took the container, some concrete, etc., and went and dumped it into a lake.

The mother is also PREGNANT.

If Mom had nothing to do with it why did she go along with hiding the body?

In my mind the mother is the bigger monster. She stayed with her daughter’s murderer and protected him.

What an adorable little girl. Anyone who would strike that child is just plain wired wrong.

I”m not a father, but my brother and my closest cousin have three kids apiece. My brother has a son and two daughters, my cousin a daughter and two sons. Smart and alert kids, each and every one. They’ll do great in school — hell, the 1-year-old wouls probably be an above-average college freshman if he started tomorrow. And if anyone, including their parents, wants to hurt one of those children, they’ll have to get past me first. But what do I know? I’m just the crazy uncle with a CCW and a claw hammer.

A two year old child is just beginning to learn to speak, and these monsters expected her to be able to say “Please” and “Yes, Sir”, “No, Sir”, and “Thank you” at the appropriate times, beating her with belts when she couldn’t comply, and then throwing her across the room and smashing her head into the floor??

THE DEATH PENALTY is too kind a punishment for these two.

I just want to cry each time I see her picture. I can not imagine why anyone would hurt a child let alone kill one because they didn’t say sir or please. My God what is wrong with people? This was a tiny child who needed love & guidance not abuse. Riley Ann rest in peace.

I agree with what you said pandora.

Clump, put the spoon away, it’s a weapon.

Hi Tina how are you? I just think a small child doesn't need more then a hand on his/her bottom. I don't see the need for a wooden spoon or any other tool. Not on a bare bottom either! I can remember being told to go cut a switch from the willow tree. If it wasn't a thick enough one well then you were in worse trouble.

Hitting/beating a child doesn't get you too far IMHO. I believe in time out or taking away favorite things. I have spanked my children when they did something like dart into the street or touch the hot stove etc. They still remember & remind me of it. I do believe spanking should be up to the parent. It ought to be legal & it is in some schools in different states. However if anyone in the school system dared to touch a child of mine I feel for them because I would be one pi$t off Pandora.

My mom should have used a wooden spoon once. During my efforts to evade her running around the house I passed through the kitchen and grabbed a flat metal pot cover and shoved it down my pants. (Of course that only enraged her more when she swatted her hand against it!!)

We didn’t spank our kids too much - and I must admit that when I did it was more because of the day I was having (hence why I tried to recognize it and not do it too much).

I’m not sure if we said a prayer, but afterwords I would hold them and hug them and tell them how much I loved them and only want them to grow up well, and sometimes that needs discipline.

Usually it was the “time outs” and taking away some privilege's that we used. But each kid was a bit different.

(Me - I sort of thought that after the thrill of the chase the whole spanking thing my mom did was a bit anticlimactic!)

Oh yeah - I hope this control freak gets to just spend enough time on death row. I think he will have a hard time having someone else tell him when to eat, when to exercise, what to wear, when to pee, etc.
