Romney puts faith in Christian past
Washington Times ^ | November 28, 2007 | Joseph Curl

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said yesterday that he hopes to convince voters that his Mormon faith is mainstream.

"I think as people come to know my faith they'll recognize that the values of my faith are — they very much flow from the Judeo-Christian tradition of this country. I believe in God, I believe in Jesus Christ, I believe in the equality of all humankind," Mr. Romney said in an interview with The Washington Times.

[Snip]

It is Mr. Romney's Mormon faith that remains a question mark in his presidential quest. The governor is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a faith that says adherents are on a journey toward godhood, that God speaks to man today through living apostles and prophets, and that the Book of Mormon, published by Joseph Smith in 1830, is the word of God.

Mr. Romney has remained mostly mum on the topic; despite his desire to deliver a speech about his Mormon faith, he has accepted the advice of political aides who advise against the move. When he was asked last year whether he wears temple garments, white underwear similar to a mesh shirt and boxer shorts that signify purity, he said: "I'll just say those sorts of things I'll keep private."

The candidate's religion, however, threatens to become a very public campaign issue — and a dangerous one. In a recent Gallup survey, just two-thirds of conservatives said they could support a Mormon candidate.

Meanwhile, other candidates, while skirting around the edges, have also brought up the governor's faith.

Mitt also believes that God (Elohim) and Jesus (Jehovah) are two separate

They are both mention in the Old Testament some how you would like to dismiss that.

Jesus also says over and over he came to do the will of his Father in heaven and the New Testament is filled with reference of that in John as well as in other books of the NT.

Jesus said he gave all the Glory to his Father and after the resurrection Jesus also receive his Glory from the Father in heaven Elohim!

The Godhead is composed of the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost.

Many of you in order to have your view would have to deny -

Luke 24:
39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

John 1:
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

1 John. 4:
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

3 And every spirit that confesseth NOT that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

Jesus Christ is resurrected with a Body of Flesh and Bone no longer a spirit or resides in a temporal abode of Flesh and Blood.

Explain now that Jesus is resurrected of Flesh and Bone fits into the description of the Nicene Trinity?

Joseph Smith was a false prophet. Mormons do not believe in the God of the Bible. You are trying to mislead others about Mormons’ true beliefs.

Do you believe that the Bible is God’s word?
Do you believe that God is perfect?
If so, why would we need the Book of Mormon or the Pearl of Great Price? Do you think God left something out the first time?

You are taking Scriptures out of context and twisting them to suit your purposes. Let these words serve as a warning to you:

“Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. Do not add to his words, lest He reprove you, and you be found a liar.” Proverbs 30:5-6.

“For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” Revelation 22:18-19.

Jesus is not a created being, nor is He Lucifer’s brother, as Mormons contend. The Mormon church tries to deceive people into thinking they are just another Christian church by using some of the same terminology, but in the Mormon mind, these terms have very different meanings than they would to a true Bible-believing Christian.

Take a look at Genesis:

“Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.’” Genesis 1:26. “Us” and “Our” are plural. Who do you think God was talking to when He said this?

How about the New Testament?

“Then they all said, ‘Are You then the Son of God?’ And He said to them, ‘You rightly say that I am.’” Luke 22:70.

Since Mormons do not worship the God of the Bible, they are not Christians. It’s that simple.

To suggest that Jesus Christ is a created being is blasphemous. That teaching seeks to undermine His divinity. You are on very dangerous ground if you suggest that. You are on even more dangerous ground if you try to deceive others into believing it.

You will not be able to stand before the true and living God and claim ignorance. You have been warned.

I believe in the equality of all humankind,"

Where is this taught in the Bible? God loves some and hates others (example: Jacob and Esau). God selected the Jews to be his people, and the Arabs; not.

The only equality implied in scripture is that we are all equally depraved sinners. Let's hear Romney make that point.

Thanks for the tip. My God, the true and living God, has my life in His hands. He can do with it as He sees fit. He is able to protect me.

For the record, I always look both ways before crossing the street.

I am praying for you—to the true and living God, not to a false god—and the millions who have been similarly deceived.

Restornu, you said the words, “everlasting Gospel.”

Don’t you see that it is the Truth? The Gospel is everlasting, and did not have to be “restored” as your false prophets have declared! The everlasting gospel never fell away.

Do you know of a “fair and balanced” website that explains Mormonism?
If you want to know what Mormon's believe, ask one. :)

Churches who believe in the Nicene Creed don't consider Mormons as Christians. The Nicene Creed was defined by Councils in Nicaea (A.D. 325), Constantinople (A.D. 381), Ephesus (A.D. 431), and Chalcedon (A.D. 451).

The differences between the god defined by the Nicene Creed and the Mormon understanding were discussed by Mormon leaders in their October 2007 conference. You can read their teachings directly here (all links open in a new window):

The Only True God and Jesus Christ Whom He Hath Sent, by LDS Apostle Jeffrey R. Holland: HTML Text, MP3 Audio, or WMV Video.

The Stone Cut Out of the Mountain, by LDS Church President Gordon B. Hinckley: HTML Text, MP3 Audio, or WMV Video.

Other formats and languages and other LDS General Conference talks are available here.

There will be many who will share their opinions about LDS doctrine from a non-LDS (or anti-LDS) perspective. If you have questions about Mormon beliefs, Mormon.org offers the ability to research or ask a Mormon directly about their beliefs by email or anonymous online chat.

BTW, My current preference is #1: Hunter, #2: Thompson, #3: Romney. I have no interest in the rest.

“Do you know of a “fair and balanced” website that explains Mormonism?”

Mormonism Research Ministry is anything but fair and balanced. There are official websites like mormon.org and lds.org. There you can read over our Sunday School lesson manuals and our scriptures and conference reports and nearly 40 years of church published magazines. You can go there and see what Mormons teach for yourself then make up your own mind.

There are also unofficial pro-Mormon sites, and other sites who make it their mission to attack Mormonism. I have never seen an anti-Mormon website that I would consider fair and accurate in it’s portrayal of our faith.

“I always thought they were Christian, but I’ve had friends-—mostly Baptist-—saying they’re not and I want to get to the bottom of it.”

First you will have to define what a Christian is. If you go by what the dictionary says, Mormons are Christians. We accept the Bible as scripture, we believe Christ is the Son of God and the Savior. That alone justifies our claim as being Christians by definition.

Those who call us non-Christians claim that to be a Christian requires accepting the Trinity and other elements of orthodox Christian theology. The dictionary puts no such requirement for orthodoxy on the definition. We claim those parts of orthodox Christianity that we reject were invented by men after the apostolic age and were not part of original Christianity.

The most accurate thing to say is that Mormons are Christians, but not part of orthodox Christianity.

Restornu, you are taking this Scripture out of context. It is a prophecy of events that have not yet taken place. It does not support Mormon false doctrines (the Book of Mormon, the Pearl of Great Price, etc.).

If you’re going to quote God’s word, you should at least quote Him correctly (in context). Be careful—you are choosing your side, and it is the side of a false doctrine.

“Joseph Smith was a false prophet. Mormons do not believe in the God of the Bible. You are trying to mislead others about Mormons’ true beliefs.”

No, we are trying to correct the false ideas others have about us, such as those you just stated.

“Do you believe that the Bible is God’s word?”

Yes.

“Do you believe that God is perfect?”

Yes.

“If so, why would we need the Book of Mormon or the Pearl of Great Price? Do you think God left something out the first time?”

Some anchient Jew probably said “Why would we need this ‘New Testement’ then if God is perfect?” God being perfect doesn’t mean he is done giving us scripture, he can do that as often as he likes, by whatever timetable he deems wise. If you love the word of God, why would having more of it make you angry?

“Revelation 22:18-19”

That is only a command to man to alter what God reveals. You can find the same command given in Deut 4:2. It in now way restricts God from granting more revelation and more scripture, in fact a few of the NT books were written AFTER John wrote Revelation. It seem that YOU have taken something out of context.

“Jesus is not a created being”

And we would agree with you there. His spirit was begotten in the beginning and he created the universe under his Father’s direction. He was the Jehovah of the OT, the great I AM and God of Israel. His body was begotten by a miracle that caused a virgin to give birth to him about 2000 years ago.

“nor is He Lucifer’s brother”

In the physical sense, we agree. Lucifer never had and never will have a physical body. The Bible however says that Lucifer was a’ son of the morning’, so who then would be his father? Would not two spirits begotten of the Father be siblings in the spiritual sense? Can you show in the Bible where it says they are not brothers in this way? No, it doesn’t say that, so what then is your claim is based on?

“The Mormon church tries to deceive people into thinking they are just another Christian church by using some of the same terminology, but in the Mormon mind, these terms have very different meanings than they would to a true Bible-believing Christian.”

We believe in Christ, that makes us Christians by definition. We do what we can to be as clearly and correctly understood as possible. What point would there be in lying or decieving people into joining us? As soon as they find out they were mislead they would be gone.

““Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.’” Genesis 1:26. “Us” and “Our” are plural. Who do you think God was talking to when He said this?”

God the Father was talking with Jehovah. We cite this as one of many verses that indicates that the Father and Son are two separate beings, contrary to what the Trinity claims.

“Since Mormons do not worship the God of the Bible, they are not Christians. It’s that simple.”

Disagreeing with you over what is the correct interpretation of the Bible is not worshiping a different God, it is a difference of opinion about the SAME God.

Instead of sanctimoniously telling us (incorrectly) what we believe and delivering your ‘warning’, try giving a fair hearing to our side.
