The Meltdown Of Hugo Chavez
IBD ^ | November 26, 2007

Latin America: Hugo Chavez's reaction to being fired as mediator between Colombia and his narcoterrorist pals shows the evil game Venezuela's dictator has played against his neighbor. It also signals trouble at home.

In telling Chavez that his services would no longer be needed, Colombia President Alvaro Uribe was firm but polite. He thanked Chavez for his "help" in seeking a swap between 500 FARC guerrillas in jail in Colombia and some 45 "high value" hostages being held by the same terrorists who've been at war with Colombia since 1964.

But as a mediator, Chavez proved he could keep neither a promise nor a secret, mainly because it was a fiction to think he could be partial. But the blow to his ego obscured any knowledge of that. "Colombia has spit in our faces," he said.

In theory, a mediator should persuade two sides to each give up something to achieve a common end. The only one who gave up anything, however, was Uribe, who watched Chavez cavort with terrorists before TV cameras, giving them a legitimacy in Caracas they never had known.

Even worse, Chavez proved to be acting as an agent of the terrorists. Uribe's sudden cutoff of the mediation effort at a hastily organized press conference last Wednesday suggested disturbing new information.

very well written and concise article. Now it should also be noted by IBD that the Democrats are opposing trade legislation involving Colombia which is certainly a fine way to treat our more valubale allies in Larin America...............The US Congress has postponed discussion of free-trade agreements (FTAs) signed with Peru and Panama for several months, while indicating that it will not consider the accord with Colombia at all at this time. This represents a huge setback for the Colombian government of President Alvaro Uribe, who has invested much political capital in his strong alliance with Washington and in promoting a bilateral trade agreement. The deal is now unlikely to be revived until 2008 at the earliest, and could even be put off indefinitely. In the meantime, Canada is stepping into the void with a proposed bilateral trade agreement of its own.

going to be interesting to see how the media handles it when he ‘wins’ the referendum with a comfortable margin. He is actually getting some negative press now.

gives new meaning to “looney left”.

I wonder if the Hollywood snobs will go down and tell the stupid, poor citizens of Hugoland how good they got it. No more shopping for food! (there is none), No more wasting time watching TV (it gone) and the end of obesity! (starvation or the North Korean Diet).
