November 22, 2007 Snarls, smears and innuendo as attack dogs get ready for the fray Hillary Clinton and her aide, Huma Abedin Tim Reid in Columbia, South Carolina
The anonymous e-mails and letters began dropping into inboxes and through front doors this summer.
One claimed that Hillary Clinton was having a lesbian affair with Huma Abedin, her beautiful aide. Another online mass-mailing cautioned of the dark secrets of Mitt Romneys Mormonism. A blogger claiming to support John McCain said that Rudy Giuliani's wife supported the killing of innocent puppies. Flyers appeared on cars accusing Barack Obama of being a Muslim extremist. An anonymous website said that Fred Thompson was a corrupt playboy.
Welcome to South Carolina, the foulest swamp of electoral dirty tricks in America. This states primary race has already become the sleaziest leg of the 2008 presidential campaign.
Here, political operatives know only one way to win: take your opponents head off. The Palmetto States primary follows hard on the heels of Iowa and New Hampshire and is the candidates first foray into the Deep South. For Republicans, in particular, it is crucial: since South Carolina gained its first-in-the-South status in 1980, no Republican has received the party nomination without winning the state.
South Carolina is a do-or-die state again, said Rod Shealy, a veteran Republican consultant, over a meal of fried pork and beans in his favourite diner, the Lizards Thicket. The attacks are already coming on a daily basis. And with the anonymity of the internet, were going to see new lows in dirty politics that would have been unimaginable recently.
Mr Shealy knows a thing or two about dirty politics. In 1990, when running his sisters campaign for lieutenant governor, he paid an unemployed black fisherman facing felony charges to run for Congress to increase white voter turnout. He was convicted of breaking campaign laws.
Mr Shealy is among a small band of political consultants who wield enormous influence in South Carolina. They are bitter rivals and all learnt their trade from Lee Atwater, a South Carolina native and the first President Bushs notorious and venal attack dog. Dirty politics ran in his blood. He once explained that the way to win a campaign lay in strippin the bark off an opponent.
The most grizzled political veterans until recently believed that the apogee of their states slash-and-burn mentality was reached in 2000, when John McCains presidential ambitions were emasculated by operatives working for Mr Bush.
After losing badly to Mr McCain in New Hampshire, the Bush team knew as one operative says that they had to chop him up in South Carolina. Flyers appeared saying that Mr McCain had fathered an illegitimate child with a black woman (he and his wife have an adopted Bangladeshi girl). A whispering campaign was started claiming that his five years as a Vietnamese prisoner of war had made him mentally unstable. His wife was a drug addict, people were told in anonymous telephone calls. Mr Bush and his former chief strategist, Karl Rove another Atwater protégé always denied any involvement. But Mr McCains campaign never recovered.
The brutality of South Carolinas Republican primaries has until now involved the states hatchet men putting the partys establishment candidate Mr Bush in 2000 back on track after upsets in Iowa or New Hampshire. What is different this year is that at least four Republican candidates Mr McCain, Mr Romney, Mr Giuliani and Mr Thompson are all heading to South Carolina with a realistic chance of winning the state. That means that the traditional two-man showdown will be replaced by a multi-candidate massacre among a group of men ripe for attack.
The question this year is not whether the race will be dirtier than 2000, said Will Folks, the former spokesman for Mark Sanford, the Republican Governor of the state. The question is, when will it cross that threshold?
The man who masterminded the destruction of Mr McCain in 2000 is Warren Tompkins, known by some operatives in South Carolina as the God of Hell. He has been hired this year by Mr Romney. He has already had to answer questions about his tactics.
The anonymous anti-Fred Thompson website PhoneyFred.org was traced to his consulting company.
He claimed that it was the act of an errant employee acting independently. Mr McCain has hired Richard Quinn, another of the states top consultants. Mr Folks says that the Tompkins and Quinn camps are using two websites, The Shot and The Palmetto Scoop respectively, which masquerade as objective blogs but in reality peddle daily dirt on opponents.
A picture of Mr Giuliani wearing drag at an event when he was New Yorks mayor has appeared frequently. The day after scurrilous anonymous phone calls were made to New Hampshire voters about Mr Romneys Mormonism this week, The Palmetto Scoop claimed that it was a ruse by the Romney campaign to drum up sympathy for the candidate. Mr Romney will need all of Mr Tompkinss hardknuckle guile in a state where many social conservatives view Mormonism as a cult. The night before a Republican debate in May several conservative activists received an anonymous, eight-page letter entitled Mormons in Contemporary American Society: A Politically Dangerous Religion?
Nobody is sure who is behind the attacks on Mrs Clinton and Mr Obama, but the claims of lesbianism and Islamic extremism have found fertile ground on right-wing websites. Mr Obama, a Christian, was forced to deny the rumours at a campaign event on November 9.
Lee Bandy, who has written about South Carolina politics for 40 years, says of the Republican campaign: The race is so close this year there is no telling what these guys will do to win. And a guy like Rudy Giuliani is a prime target.
Interesting how the article looked at both (R) and (D) candidate smears, but still managed to blame (R)’s for all of them!
I believe that someday we will learn that this woman really works for mooselimb extremists.
She almost looks OK in that picture. There are others that are, shall we say, less flattering. What interests me more is where she gets the money for designer clothes - a different dress every day, according to friends. Her clothes cost way more than her salary.
If she is I must admit that Mrs. Clinton (as opposed to her husband) has very exquisite taste. If she is not why in the hell does she keep a political liability (Muslim of middle east and Indian extraction) as one of her very closet advisers and handlers?
Huma Abedin....Cartoon version of “whom I been beddin?”
Sometimes you can hear a nightingale sing in Gorky park.
I love democracy...I really do. How did it come to this?
Sounds like a gynecological test and an Italian suppository - what kind of kinky sex is that?
Surprised a little that this is going mainstream so early.
Which is worse? Hillary the Lesbian, or Hillary’s closest “friend” a Muslim born in MI and raised in Saudi Arabia whose parents are prominent Islamists in Saudi Arabia today. Huma’s mother wears the hijab and veil.
Huma is 29 years old and has a salary of $28K per year. Yet she managed to buy a condo for almost a million bucks, and is a shop-a-holic with tastes for $5,000 handbags, and $600 shoes.
Hillary gets screwed, so to speak, either way.
Old news, or not true. Clinton 101.
Clinton 102. Diversion from what Huma Abedin might really be. Hillary’s Arab controller.
These are Clinton news plants in one of their patented defusion techniques.
Its a transparent ploy because the rumor comes entirely from anonymous sources via liberal publications/reporters...instead of from verifiable facts and conservatives on the ground.
Well, it's hard for me to not relay some information I have on the situation. To keep someone from getting in hot water, this will be necessarily vague: I have a friend who was assigned security detail at the White House during the Clinton Occupation. During his nightly rounds in a part of the White House that no one was supposed to be in, he saw Hillary sneaking out of a locked, dark room with another woman (not Huma, and, this woman has been talked about from other sources so this would not be a new rumor).
Hillary has to be careful if her campaign is trying to play a political game with this type of rumor. All it will take is one of Hillary's ex affairs to go public. With Hillary's private demeanor being acerbic, did they all leave on good terms?
I’m not naive (I am a Thompson supporter, by the way, but will vote for the final GOP nominee in order to beat Hillary). I know Rudy has homosexual friends.
And RE the other post - Being female, I do wear a dress occasionally to impress friends. I have also dressed up as (male) Dr. Who 2 for a sci fi convention, which means about as much as Rudy dressing up for a joke or on TV. If you have proof of his “cross-dressing” on an average day, let’s see it.
I’m quite aware of Milton Bearle’s antics or schtick, and there have been other people as well like Mel Gibson in “What Woman Want”.
The difference is Rudy is trying to be the President of the US, he is pro gay rights (to marry) and he also stayed with his gay friends after he broke up with his 2nd wife.
A NYT columnist who interviewed Rudy at the time mentioned something about kissing when Rudy left the apartment in the morning, no whether that was “Almost kissing” or whatever, that will be hashed out in SC to be sure.
.."I'm just here for the table scraps"
Not possible! No one could live through an affair with Smellary.
‘The most grizzled political veterans until recently believed that the apogee of their states slash-and-burn mentality was reached in 2000, when John McCains presidential ambitions were emasculated by operatives working for Mr Bush. ‘
I’ve seen this claim a million times on the internet, but I’ve never once seen anything close to ‘proof’ they were ‘operatives working for Mr Bush’.
Never once.
