Former Tennessee Senator and presidential candidate Fred Thompson has been accused of lacking fire to run for the presidency.
Seeking to alter that image, Thompson fired away at Chris Wallace of Fox News this morning, accusing the network of being biased against his campaign:
Thompson said, "This has been a constant mantra of Fox, to tell you the truth." He noted that other conservatives have praised his bid for the GOP nomination and took issue with a Fox promo that focused on polling in New Hampshire, where Thompson is registering in the single digits.Thompson has a point. While his campaign has been universally criticized for gaffes and missteps early on, it is equally clear Thompson has righted the ship in recent weeks and is starting to generate some momentum. He said he is running second in national polls and has been leading or tied for the lead in South Carolina for "a long, long time." Thompson, in a firm, but measured tone, scolded Wallace: "...for you to highlight nothing but the negatives in terms of the polls and then put on your own guys who have been predicting for four months, really, that I couldn't do it, kind of skew things a little bit. There's a lot of other opinion out there."
His policy papers on social security and immigration have been widely praised on the right as being well rounded, thoughtful, and meaty. His tone on the stump has changed as well as he as begun to criticize both Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney for what he calls their "fake" conservatism.
The media, including Fox, have focused largely on the inside the beltway criticism of the campaign and the candidate himself while ignoring the fact that despite the bad start he is still polling in second place nationally among Republicans.
At the very least, this criticism of Fox shows Thompson to have some fire in the belly - something the media has criticized him for lacking. It also shows an independent streak that not too many candidates have demonstrated.
Hanity does this coverage by exclusion biased journalism as a matter of course.
After the debates on FNC, he asked Giuliani about the marriage issue but did not press on the amendment but blatently directed thompson’s interview to the non-marriage issue.
I can’t listen to hanity’s radio show because of this absurd bias. Thanks to FNC’s rudygiuliani bias I now surf the other news channels to cobble together information not available here on FR.
The hilarity is that Hunter may not win a GOP primary but would sure be more of a sure thing than pathetic Fred in a general election. But we may get to put you to the test in your assurances of Fred’s ‘electability’. It is really his being an actor you think will carry the day. Except he doesn’t come across as well in real life.
i think Hunter is a fine man, but he is not catching on, and i don’t see that happening, frankly. his best hope would be to be Fred’s VP and then run in 4 years. Good luck to you. i get no jollies out of demeaning other candidates, unlike others here who get off on bashing fred. it doesn’t serve Hunter well, to have his fans bashing fred.
“Uh huh..
Support Hunter, but ok with Rudy or Romney?
Odd that...”
Your post to me. I’m Nolan Ryan and your Dave Kingman. Your not ready for the majors!
The sheer NUMBER of posts made is astounding. I asked another FReeper a while back if he were being paid by the post by the campaign...someone else remarked it must be the he was being paid by the WORD.
Here's something to cheer us all up!
On a Fred thread you went on to take swings at Thompson...
I was just taking my turn on the mound...
0 for 9....
When I first started to pay attention to politics during the ‘92 election I was a fan of President HW Bush for his decency and as I learned and read more about him and his family I just came up with the name ‘bushfamfan’ when I logged on here. They are good people, but as I’ve come to learn, not the best for politics.
hey. as long as they swing, I’ll pitch until I have to work, which is coming on 5 minutes...
Every day for you is an ‘off year’. Striiiiiiiike!!
Yes, speak well and then resort to attempting to silence dissent in accusing me of ‘bashing’ Fred. Hunter gets bashed by Fredbots enough.
a perfect 0 for 10...
I would adjust your stance back a little bit, you may get more hits if you were a tick less aggressive and a bit more controlled...
case closed
You can quit swinging now, you need a rest.
Simply voicing my opinion, dear. This is political discussion and the 1st Amendment at work here.
hunter takes flak for his supporters posts here, unfortunately. the antifred posts by hunterites far outnumber [by # of posters, not # of posts] those of hunterbashing fredbots. my reason for even addressing you was the incongruity of someone who supports hunter accusing Fred of being unelectable, when hunter can’t even break out of single digits. my complaint is not with hunter, in the slightest.
did you say you first began following politics during the ‘92 election cycle?
Speak for yourself.
He was not complaining. He was telling the truth. It has been obvious for months that Fox supports Rudy the Liberal.
You have worked hard...
Here, have a coke...
Seems I have been the picture of calm...
Just tossing the pitches...
