The Club for Growth opposes Congressman Hunter
The Club for Growth ^ | October 30, 2006 | Andrew Roth

Posted on 11/24/2007 6:20:54 PM PST by Kurt Evans

Since Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) is apparently going to explore the possibility of running for president in 2008, I thought I'd dig up some of his roll call votes. Like most Republicans, he's strong on tax cuts, but he's been part of the big government spending spree of the last 6 years. He also has a protectionist streak in him. Here are some of the more troubling votes:

NO on NAFTA

YES on No Child Left Behind

YES on Sarbanes-Oxley

YES on the 2003 Medicare Drug Benefit

NO on CAFTA

YES on 2005 Highway Bill

YES on the 527 bill (like most Republicans, he flip-flopped, having first voted NO on McCain-Feingold)

Hunter also went 0 for 19 on the Flake anti-pork amendments.

Despite being a member of the Republican Study Committee, Hunter frequently votes NO on their fiscally conservative annual budgets (2006, 2005, 2003...)

We gave him a 49% on the 2005 Club for Growth scorecard. That places him 187th within the House GOP conference, out of roughly 230 members.

National Taxpayers Union shows a more telling trend. He was strong in the early 1990s, getting "B's" and one "A", but as time went by, like most politicians, his score dropped. For the past few years, he's been getting "C's".

Club for Growth Challenges Huckabee to a Debate

The following is a press release I received from the Club

for Growth. They are challenging Mike Huckabee to a public

debate about his fiscal record, one replete with never-

ending taxes and spending. Huck has called into question

the claims of the Club for Growth, but he hasn’t been able

to disprove any of them. Instead, he’s been parsing the

issues, claiming the mantle of fiscal conservative while

excusing his career of being a fiscal liberal.

Thank you, sir!

To answer your question: clearly only a traitor.

Be on the lookout.

They look for a pro-business, fiscally conservative candidate.

Hunter isn’t strong in either sense. He’s not bad, but both Thompson and even Romney do better in that regard.

Of course.

But there are candidates out there that are just as strong on the WOT that won’t turn our economy into a 1600s serf/sustinence economy in the process.

Fred Thompson comes to mind.

I live here in the real world, in San Diego with the largest concentration of military also sitting around 18 miles north from the largest and busiest border crossing in the world

To many folks on FR in their small towns in low populated states in no mans land don’t have a clue what is going on.

I don’t give a rats ass about the economy and am sure those jumping from the WTC on 9/11 didn’t either.

If we don’t win, nothing matters.

Hunter is the only candidate that has the longest and most extensive background in military and national security.
as ranking member of the armed services comm.

Also knows it first hand as a Viet nam war vet and his son has done 3 tours in the current war.

Hunter’s military record is impeccable and without comparison.

Which is why he’ll make a great Secretary of Defense for Fred Thompson.

I’d rather support a guy who hasn’t been a career politician for the last 25 years.

Hunter is the only one doing control for the border.

A few others are only me too while Hunter does the heavy lifting.

He is one of our 5 congressmen here in San Diego.

We in San Diego spend tens of millions of dollars a yrs on social services for illegals and we are fed up.

YOu are in OK and have no clue.

Have you ever faced over 50,000 Mexicans with anti American signs and their Mexican flags marching down the street.

No time for folks on training wheels while we are at war.

Since you have’t faced over 50,000 Mexicans
then for sure you have no clue what is going on and why Hunter is involved the the border and illegal issues.

“A few days back someone posted that Duncan Hunter had voted in support of McCain Feingold ...”

Ironically I did the same thing in the Hannity forums after taking the Club for Growth’s claim that Congressman Hunter had “flip-flopped” at face value. I think it was Sun who corrected me, for which I’m most grateful. :-)

Fact of the matter is, only 66 out of 534 members of Congress did NOT vote for NCLB. Only 34 members voted against the medicare bill.

Why is no one talking about the biggest freedom grab in recent history any more? There are FReepers that actually were saying President Bush should be impeached for signing this unconstitutional piece of legislation. Only 11 republican senators voted for it. Right now two of the 11 are running for president and I'm hearing crickets. Why is that???

To reform the financing of Federal elections.
Mr. MCCAIN (for himself, Mr. FEINGOLD, Mr. THOMPSON,

As for the Club for Growth, they may want to take a look at their archives.

this is why I switched from Hunter to Fred. Hunter turned out to be one of the “Hastert Republicans” who didn’t get the message on spending and why we lost in 2006.

Among other problems with their list of "troubling" votes, I'd say their suggestion that a vote in favor of the 527 Reform Act constitutes a flip-flop on McCain-Feingold is blatant deception and an outrageous cheap shot.

Hunter was also instrumental in pushing the Internet gambling ban. Anyone who censors the Internet and illegally extends the reach of American law enforcement overseas is off my list.
