Thompson Strolls Through S.C. Gun Show

By JIM DAVENPORT – 2 hours ago

LADSON, S.C. (AP) — White House hopeful Fred Thompson called his trip down aisle of rifles, shotguns and pistols at a gun show "a day in paradise," and said he wished he could come back to spend more time and money.

It was the former Tennessee senator and "Law and Order" actor's second trip to a gun show since launching his late bid for the GOP nomination in September.

He reached out and picked up an old M-1 Garand rifle and raised an over-and-under Winchester shotgun suitable for the skeet shooting he's been known to do as he made his way through the 200 vendors at The Land of the Sky Gun Show at a fairgrounds just outside of North Charleston, S.C.

"It's a beautiful day in paradise," Thompson said when greeted by one of the people packing the show's aisles.

Thompson was a hit with James Hill, 65, from Summerville. "It's absolutely important to come to gun shows," Hill said. Thompson, he said, wins his support because he's strong on Second Amendment gun ownership rights. "He's right where our strength is."

Anthony DiPaolo, 22, said he wasn't ready to settle on a presidential candidate yet, but said he'd narrowed his field to three Republicans — Thompson, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. "I like Fred Thompson's stance on firearms," he said. "I don't want to see anymore assaults on my Second Amendment rights."

But DiPaolo added that he also liked Giuliani's handling of the terrorist attacks in New York and Romney's "business plan." And, he has doubts about Thompson's ability to win the nomination.

"I just think he got in too late," DiPaolo said.

While mingling with the crowd, someone else mentioned the late entry and Thompson responded that he got in at just the right time.

... since launching his late bid

Oh, come on now. He didn't start as early as the others, who broke all records to start early, but "late bid"? Any earlier for this cycle and it would have happened immediately after the last inauguration.

Kerry looks like he would be more at home with a copy of Marx's Das Kapital in his hand....and Edwards looks like he misses his Barbie :-)

And Hillary looks like -- well, never mind, I don't want to spoil anyone's breakfast.

As long as he doesn’t say something like “hunting is a great tradition, and I am all for hunters having guns....”,

Come on, now -- hunting is a great tradition, and a hunter ain't gonna bag ;;;;;;;many critters if he they ain't got guns. Of course there are bows and arrows, aren't there?

Oh well, have it your way ....

LOL...thats close to what I said at the new Cabelas store in Lacey last Sunday.

Uh oh. You said the C-word :)

I took the Big Mew to the Cabelas in Hamburg, PA a couple of years ago for his birthday. Huge, gorgeous, incredibly well-stocked store. (And the lady's room was immaculate.) I almost didn't get Big Mew back.

And note to the guy in the article who's undecided between Romney, Guiliani, and FDT: It's only too late if you vote for a RINO.

Sorry about the rant....I'll go have a cookie and a glass of milk and I'll feel better :-)

I couldn't agree more. Now go have 2 cookies -- you earned them.

Why does this man have his finger on the trigger in both pix.

Doesn’t appear he’s too familiar with firearms, if he was, he’d know......keep your finger off the trigger.

Treat the weapon as if it were loaded....all the time.

Did you notice the piece of plastic colored red? That's a tie tie. Fred couldn't have fired the weapon even if loaded without first cutting the thing off first...

All, from my above link: the museum’s legit, but I’m not too sure about the collection. Sounds good, though.

mittfans really ought to think twice before opening their figurative mouths to accuse the opposition of some of the silly things their OWN candidate has done.

I was thinking more of “...the Second Amendment isn’t about hunting...” type of thing. That’s what always gets me about the Libs picking up a shotgun and sitting in a goose blind for an hour and say they support hunting and the 2nd.

I believe the Army and Marine drill teams still drill with the M1 (correct me if I am wrong).

The last Air Force Silent drill team I saw was using them. No bayonet, IIRC. It was about 5 years ago at a Fiesta "venue" called "Hermann's Happiness", in San Antonio. I saw them chamber a round (blank) near the end of the routine, but most of the crowd missed that because it was done pretty slickly, and thus jumped about 3 feet straight up when they fired them. :)

My 80-year-old mom just admitted that she sent Fred’s campain a donation. (I thought it was so cute!)She’s been a lifetime Republican, but there are a few Democrats over the years that she did like. She and my Step-dad(a DINO, by the way)have both mostly voted Republican.

I think she would’ve donated to GWB, if she could have. She likes him a lot, and voted for him twice. She thinks the Democrats have treated him so rotten! My Step-dad thinks like she does, and he is a Democrat, although more of a Zell Miller type! He’s voted for Republicans ever since and including Ronald Reagan. I don’t know who he supports of the Republicans this upcoming election. He’ll support whoever wins, I’m sure.
