As Democrats See Iraq Gains, a Shift in Tone
NYT ^ | 25 Nov 07 | PATRICK HEALY

As violence declines in Baghdad, the leading Democratic presidential candidates are undertaking a new and challenging balancing act on Iraq: acknowledging that success, trying to shift the focus to the lack of political progress there, and highlighting more domestic concerns like health care and the economy.

focus to the lack of political progress there

Really stupid move on their part. They are opening the door right into their own faces yet again.

As the DC Old Boy's club has been told. 1st you got to restore security. Then you will get economic progress out of which will come political progress.

Democrats would be better off just dropping the issue wholly. Everytime they try to move the goal posts on Iraq, they end up dropping them right on top of their own heads.

Agreed. They should stick to other things they know little about but which are less obvious.

For those in the marginal districts, they will flip. The patriotic parts of America will demand it.

Smartest thing they could have done would be to make it a non issue. Just say we support the war too. That way GOP would have to run on other issues as opposed to foreign policy / defense.

I am having great fun going to Leftist websites like Digg and posting as many of these sorts of articles as possible. Funny how Iraq is suddenly a non issue now that the facts are getting out.

Political reconciliation, Mr. Biden said in the statement, “hasn’t happened and it won’t until the administration stops trying to build a strong central government in Baghdad and starts implementing my plan to build up local control.”

Capital idea, Joe! But first, let’s try that in the USA. The central government has been riding roughshod over local control since Abraham Lincoln destroyed the states-rights South. And we can see the bloated, expensive mess our country is in because of the fraudulent central government we’ve supported with our seized paychecks ever since.

one thing that is missing is Bush defending the policy and explaining American people how the situation has improved.

yes, I know, Bush may be giving talks somewhere and MSM is not covering them, but this is not an excuse. Good communicator would do this.

There is a decent chance that “Victory achieved in Iraq despite sabotage from dems” is the campaign theme for GOP in 2008.

free advice to Bush: In State of the Nation speech, make a strong case how things have improved and in the end of that segment, thank for General Petreus and the troops for achieving victory in Iraq (republicans and J.Lieberman applauding and Hillary looking awkward trying to applaud the troops but not Bush).

Before this is over, the ‘rats will be fully behind the President’s war effort.

And claim that it was their advice that made victory possible. Bet on it.

Wow, big surprise. Instead of talking about the Dems yet another thread is hijacked by the BDS crowd to rant at Bush.

Please explain to me how a "good communicator" would work around an MSM that totally ignores his message on Iraq? Take for an example this. In July, after a 2 hour press show on Iraq by the President, the MSM wholly devoted their coverage to a stupid reporters question about Scooter Libby and ignored every single word the President said about Iraq.

It not 1983 anymore. Today's "News Media" no longer pretends to be objective. They have become the wholly owned mouthpiece of the Democrat party. The only reason you are seeing this sort of story in the MSM is because the good news has become so overwhelming they simply cannot censor it anymore an look credible.

since Abraham Lincoln destroyed the states-rights South.

Ridiculous. The slave states were in rebellion before Lincoln was even sworn in.
