KEVIN Rudd and Labor are the frontrunners in the 2007 election race but a late voter surge to John Howard and the Coalition has turned the poll into a tight contest.
As both leaders blitzed the key battleground of Queensland yesterday, the election became a real contest in the last 72 hours of a gruelling six-week campaign.
The final Newspoll survey of the election shows the Coalition virtually equal to the ALP on primary votes, 43 per cent to 44per cent, which is the Government's best performance in more than a year.
The Newspoll survey, taken exclusively for The Weekend Australian on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, shows a two-party-preferred vote of 52 per cent for Labor and 48 per cent for the Coalition.
The figures suggest a 5 per cent swing to the Labor Party since the last election in 2004, which, if there were a uniform national swing, would deliver 16 seats to Labor -- the exact number it needs for victory.
Indicative swings for each state in the survey suggest Labor could win up to 24 seats.
Mr Rudd leads Mr Howard as preferred prime minister by 47 per cent to 44 per cent, although the gap has closed and the Prime Minister's satisfaction rating has jumped from 47 per cent to 51 per cent.

I intend to run or help run a live thread this evening (starting in about nine and a half hours) as the results begin to come in.
How long will it take for the votes to be counted? I’m assuming since it’s a tight race we may not know til tommorow (longer)?
Im a yank, so I’m not familiar with the electoral system in Australia besides the fact everyone has to vote.
Prayers up for our Aussie FRiends.
Well, you’re basically right in your assumption.
Normally the overall election result is known on the night of the election, but, yes, in a tight race, it can take longer - up to 13 days, potentially (postal votes must be counted if received up to 13 days after the election, provided they were posted before polls closed).
But, normally, we know the result on the night.
Hold the Fort, Friend, Keep ‘em honest!
May the Au media be as wrong as ours is!
NM keep us posted it
I forgot about your Aussie elections I live in California so what time you think polls be close for results
Just talked with Brisbane, where voting just got underway. We are all cautiously optimistic for Mr. Howard.
History will be kind to him.
They close 11pm Pacific today.
I see
Well I check out tommorow Aussie newspaper site like Aussie Age Sunday papers
Good luck to the decent humans of Australia! I certainly hope that you can keep Kevin Rudd and Labor from sending your country down the toilet!
We should do it that way here in the U.S. Six-week campaign. Not 2 friggin' years.
“..John Howard has been a great friend to us, and I am one American who will always be grateful to him for his support.”
What also impresses me about Howard is that he understands the Muslim threat to Australia and minces no words about it.
Here’s something I don’t think I’ve ever written — Go Liberals!
yep, six weeks does sound better, but here in America, (and I am speaking for me), it does take time to get the word out, and to distinguish the truth from the lies. Most Americans are too busy, to be able to take the time, but maybe you have a strong point, in your argument, less time means more Americans would have to become more informed.
May our Australian FRiends be blessed by their newly elected, and not told to bend over, as a majority of our politicians have told US here in our Nation to do, backed up by the campaign commercials for those expecting Americans to bend over and accept another lie or liar.
of topic....
I take it from your nick, you have served our Nation or are serving our Nation. I want to say, THANK YOU, before ending this post. THANK YOU!! I am shouting because of respect!
LOL
Yep - Go Liberals!
please excuse me, I meant to spell of topic as off topic.
Here is a column in a Kiwi newspaper praising Howard.

I’m just an old worn-out Marine now. These days I’m relegated to being a keyboard commando. However, I do do my part in helping to train the local militia (my kids and wife) at the rifle range.
:)
Again, SIR, Thank You, you are a Hero!
