HONOLULU: The top U.S. military commander in the Pacific said Thursday he is "perplexed and concerned" by China's last-minute decision to deny a U.S. aircraft carrier entry to Hong Kong for a previously scheduled port visit.
The USS Kitty Hawk and its escort ships were due to dock in Hong Kong for a four-day visit Wednesday until they were refused access. Hundreds of family members who had flown to Hong Kong to spend Thanksgiving with their sailors were stranded by the move.
"It's hard to put any kind of positive spin on this," Adm. Timothy Keating told The Associated Press in a telephone interview from his airplane on his way home from visiting U.S. and coalition troops in Iraq.
China later reversed its decision and said the ships could enter on humanitarian grounds, but the notice came while the vessels were already on their way back to their home ports. The vessels chose not to turn around.
It was the second time in a week China refused to let U.S. Navy ships into the port.
Keating said two U.S. minesweepers seeking to refuel and looking for shelter from bad weather in the South China Sea had asked for permission to enter Hong Kong three or four days before the Kitty Hawk incident. But these ships also were denied, he said.

Payback for the bad toy publicity?
We need to payback the payback by taking back Long Beach Harbor.
Clinton will have to give them the refund.
Refuse an order of magnitude more COSCO ships entry into Los Angeles.
its having small aircraft carrier envy
Bubba doesn't issue refunds. He screwed a local synagogue here. He made them comply with the terms of his revised contract, even though he had signed a contract without them. When the synagogue said they'd cancel, Bubba said he'd just keep the money.
So they caved. But at least dean of the local TV anchors, Larry Kane, didn't cave. He pulled out even though it was his temple.
(Just a Christmas wish...)
My best guess is that China has never been happy with USN ships making port calls in Hong Kong and has finally started to close the door completely. I consider this just a minor move in line with their grand ambition to force the USN out of Asia completely.
They don’t want to go so far as to officially ban USN visits — that would make them look bad — but if they make Hong Kong an unreliable destination by periodically denying visits at the last minute, USN planners will probably start minimizing them, eventually eliminating them all together.
It’s not like there is anything in Hong Kong that the USN can’t get anywhere else. Singapore would be just as acceptable as a port-call, logistics-wise, although perhaps not quite as fun for liberty.
We all wish something would be done in response.
We all know nothing will be.
All the American businesses that flocked to China helped them build their military capability
Of course it was Nixon who opened the door
Adm. Tim Keating, the U.S. Pacific Command leader, told reporters during his visit to China last month that while building and operating a carrier battle group is complex, the United States is willing to help.
"We would, if they choose to develop [an aircraft-carrier program], help them to the degree that they seek and the degree that we're capable, in developing their programs," Adm. Keating said.

U.S. may share missile info with China
WASHINGTON, June 4 (UPI) -- The United States would "seriously" consider sharing technology and missile warning intelligence with China, (Secretary of Defense Gates) the U.S. defense chief said Sunday.

I’m right here, laying low, staying out of trouble.
I hadn't crossed your path in awhile.
Just closed on a new home.
I designed it all myself, to be super wheelchair friendly, with everything up to ADA specs (and then some).
The cool thing is I’m going to have the old home tore down and the new one (double modular) dropped down right in it’s place.
Plus, hockey season started, so the youngest boy (team captain) is keeping my busy.
How’s it with you?
How long did it take you to design it? Did you do it alone? When can you move in?
Build an artificial island in the middle of the S. China Sea, claim it, fortify it, arm it to the teeth. See if they like that port call better.
Oh, yeah -- and claim an economic zone around it. Then issue drilling permits to U.S.-flag companies like Exxon and Marathon.
Plant the U.S. flag in the middle of their back yard and then invite them to try to take it down.
"Good fences make good neighbors," and all.
So many possibilities, so little time.
Bump for tossing COSCO from CONUS.
Pocket doors for the interior rooms (I get in my own way a lot), hardwood floors throughout (the wheelchair just ruins carpets, so so sectionals are more practical),and A GREAT BIG KITCHEN !!!
There’s a great deal of coordinating work, demolition, electrical, sewer, plumbing, phones, and such. Hopefully it will all come together without a major weather interruption, and I’ll be in the new place come January.
