Cabbage is another superstar. Lots of antioxidants, and can be used alot of different ways when you cook. Da! My wife is Ukrainian and we eat virtually no processed foods in our home. As such, I have learned that cabbage is practically indestructible and there are about 1,000 ways that in can be prepared. Prior to marrying her, I don't think I had ever bought a head of cabbage in my life. Now it is a staple.

My wife used to hate cabbage. I think it was the smell from it being over cooked all day during her childhood. I told her a couple of years ago we were going to have a New England dinner, Corned beef, boiled potatoes, cabbage, etc. Instead of cooking the cabbage in the slow cooker with the beef and other vegies ... I quartered a small head of cabbage. Buttered, peppered and added a little of salt then wrapped them tightly with saran wrap and microwaved them. She loved it! No lingering odor.

I’m Polish and Ukrainian and I make golumki all the time. Cheap to make, very filling and delicious. I just wish pierogi was as easy to make. If I could choose my last meal it would be my dear, late grandmother’s pierogi. She made dozens and dozens for Christmas. Comfort food multiplied by 1,000. Frankly, another inexpensive meal but time consuming.
