Parody song angers Latino group 'Bunch of Mexicans' not meant to be racist, WNCI DJ says Wednesday, November 21, 2007 2:58 AM By Sherri Williams THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH The Ohio Hispanic Coalition is considering a boycott of WNCI (97.9 FM) and its advertisers after the station aired a parody song called Bunch of Mexicans, which the coalition considers offensive.
The song, which aired on the station's "Morning Zoo" show yesterday, depicts 14 Latino immigrants riding in a van, working as landscapers and evading immigration officials.
Set to the tune of David Bowie's 1970s hit Young Americans, the song includes lines such as, "It sucks to be a bunch of Mexicans" and "Feel bad for the bunch of Mexicans."
"Enough is enough," said Jose Mas, chairman of the Ohio Hispanic Coalition. "The same station would not dream of broadcasting something like that about the African-American community, and we are not going to take it either."
The song, written and performed by Dave Kaelin, half of the Morning Zoo team Dave & Jimmy, was not intended to be racist, Kaelin said. Instead, it is meant as a satirical look at how Americans benefit from immigrant labor while also complaining about it, he said.
"The premise is we fat lazy Americans are going 'snap, snap' to all of these hard-working people who are working hard under the radar," Kaelin said.
Lines such as "They cooked my burger, working hard 'cause the rest of us don't wanna" and "Watchin' out for the INS so you and I can save on lawn care" illustrate his intentions, Kaelin said.
He said he wrote the song last year and has played it occasionally, though he has only heard a few complaints. The song is played when immigration issues are discussed; yesterday it followed a discussion of an increase of Spanish surnames in the U.S.
Mas said the coalition received complaints about the song after yesterday's airing from people who believe the stereotypes in the song denigrate Latinos.
Lynaa Gudino of Newark heard the song while she was driving to work and found it offensive.
"They were pretty much breaking it down to the point where their entire life is a joke, like it is something to laugh at," Gudino said.
Ohio Hispanic Coalition leaders hope to talk to station managers about the song and get an on-air apology. If they don't get one, the coalition is considering asking the station's advertisers to withdraw their support of the station.
Kaelin said he may play the song again when the topic of immigration comes up, but he welcomes the opportunity to talk about the song.
WNCI Program Director Michael McCoy believes the song is not offensive and highlights the work ethic of Mexican immigrants.
"These guys are busting their butts for low pay," he said. "That is the spirit of the song."

And it isn't. ...especially considering the fact that Mexicans aren't a race.
lol!
God save us all from the humorless.
DFU SONG: Ceilito Lindo (El President Bush and the invasion of our country)
DFU News of the Day in Song ^ | 6-2007 | Lyrics, Doug from Upland

(musical intro)
We do not like invaders aqui...our culture they will torpedo
And we are still trying to figure out why George Bush has been so estupido
There are now 20 million here...it is serious, not a joke-o
What is wrong with our leader...has his cabeza gone muy loco
Ay yay yay yay, el presidente
You're giving away our country and we'll tell you we are angry plenty
Ay yay yay yay, el presidente
Que lastima that you kissed the butt of your best amigo, Vicente
Most people know how bad Carter was...that guy was one foolish hombre
But if Bush doesn't change his tune, the term "worst" may soon be his nombre
More bad news, my emergency room has just had to close la puerta
Oh, gee, could el problemo be that the border is abierta
Ay yay yay yay, el presidente
You're giving away our country and we'll tell you we are angry plenty
Ay yay yay yay, el presidente
Que lastima that you kissed the butt of your best amigo, Vicente
"White & Nerdy"
Am I missing a bet to cry foul? It's one of my favorite parodies!
God knows it's always funniest laughing at and belittling other groups of people.
True. Laughing at youse Pittsburgh people has always been a hobby of mine.
Mexican Americans don't like to just get into gang fights, they like flowers and music and white girls named Debbie too. Mexican Americans are named Chata and Chella and chemma and have a son in law named jeff. Mexican Americans don't like to get up early in the morning but they have to so they do it real slow. Mexican Americans love education so they go to night school and take spanish and get a B. Mexican Americans love their Nana's and their Nono's and their Nina's and their Nino's........ Nano Nano Nina Nono! Mexican Americans don't like to go to the movies where the dude has to wear contact lenses to make his blue eyes brown cause don't it make my brown eyes blue..... "And thats all i got, how do ya like it?" *phone rings* Mexican Americans like to answer telephone calls and say hello to whoever's on the other end
Beaners.... Beaners.... Beaners... Beaners.. Are Gonna Kick you in the Face
Oh, I consider all humanity a prolific source of amusement. Even myself. ESPECIALLY myself.
Who’s from Pittsburg?
Jorge is one of FR’s double agents.
Jose is correct - it isn’t a laughing matter. Instead of singing songs about day labor illegals, we should be rounding them up, cramming them into cattle cars and shoving them back across the border through a checkpoint in a fortified wall.
Sorry, Western PA.
I'm sure other people also must love mocking and belittling you for a laugh.
But I thought we were talking about racist humor, directed at entire groups of people.
Are you from Western PA?
I married one. Biggest mistake of my life.
Buccaneer is a DU troll. Everybody knows.
