I like the Heifer project! It encourages entrepreneurism! One year the kids bought a "llama for Mama"; I loved it! That same year we bought some rabbits and goats in MY Mama's name, then sent her the little cardboard card/ornament describing the gift. She liked it, too!
It's actually a great way for teenagers to give gifts to their friends. It's a nice gesture and helps someone in need in the process. The kids have got enough junk anyway. ;o)
