MENOMINEE -- A Wisconsin-based group of atheists are protesting a decision by Menominee officials to allow a nativity scene on city property.
The nativity will be in the bandshell.
The Freedom from Religion Foundation filed a letter with the city, saying the display would violate the separation of Church and State.
The Parks and Recreation Committe's approval of the bandshell display comes with the provision that non-Christians be allowed to add their symbols.
Nativity scene plans reconsidered After much controversy, plans for a nativity scene will be reconsidered. Posted: Wednesday, November 21, 2007 at 7:27 a.m.
MENOMINEE -- City officals in Menominee will reconsider plans for their nativity scene this year after a complaint was filed against the annual tradition.
The Freedom from Religion Foundation, based in Madison, Wisconsin, sent the letter last week. The Foundation says the City-sponsored nativity scene that will be displayed in Menominee, violates the separation of Church and State.
In an effort to work out a suitable agreement, the city will now encourage other faiths to display their symbols at the city bandshell.
"I just sent a brief letter back, recommending that they wait until all the decorating is done, finished up before they, they take a look at it, before they make a decision as to whether it's appropriate or not," stated Eric Strah, Menominee City Manager.
The nativity scene will be located at the bandshell near the marina on 1st Street.
A public works crew will set it up after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Why can’t atheists just ignore the nativities during Christmastime? Or are their panties so badly bunched up in there that it’s just impossible?
Sometimes you have to look far away for a chance to get your name in the paper, apparently.
Maybe we can keep them quiet by putting a statue of Madeline Murray O’Hair alongside the Nativity scene.
Honestly, if atheists are so dang secure in thier (non) beliefs do they really have to do crap like this? If you don’t believe in Christ and don’t believe Christmas is worth celebrating as Jesus’ birthday, then don’t celebrate it as such. If you are so easily offended by a nativity scene don’t go see it. It’s really quite simple, atheists!! Show some of the tolerence you claim Christians don’t have and tolerate it!! I could go on and on with my anger but I won’t. I don’t want to have to pay for somebody’s keyboard when they fall asleep reading this Tylenol PM set to words.
If they don’t believe in God why are they so offended?
“If they dont believe in God why are they so offended?”
It has to do with the fact that it’s on public property...and they’re indoctrinated by the anti-American element in this country to drag out the abused “separation of church and state” crapola. They’re reactionary whiners...nothing more. Unfortunately, the squeaky wheel gets greased...so we have to squeak louder.
Anyone want to join?
I'd also like to belong to the Freedom from Gay Pride Parade Foundation too since a lot of those people don't have the common sense to put some clothes on... the last thing I ever want to see again is a pot-bellied, old man in a diaper.
Pittsburgh used to go through this every year. The city would put up a Nativity scene — someone complained. They put up a display celebrating all religions (including Kwanzaa which is not really a religion) — someone filed suit. Every year it was something someone didn’t like, and every year the already nearly bankrupt city had to spend money on legal fees to defend against the whiners and complainers.
Today, the city has this non-offensive display — so sanitized, you just about don’t notice it. Now the Christmas tree is called the Unity Tree. Bleah. Then the season itself was called “Sparkle Season.” Last year, it was “Holiday Season with a Twist.” Twist of what, I don’t know. Not sure what they’re calling it this year.
One year someone filed suit when the USX Tower (private property) put up this really gorgeous creche. Fortunately, the judge tossed the case.
About atheists — I know quite a few and they really don’t care one way or the other. These whiners don’t necessarily represent all atheists. They just want to find something to whine and complain about (and in the process, try to bankrupt every government entity).
What is it about the clause ‘free exercise thereof’ that these intolerant atheist nitwits don’t understand?
Why doesn’t somebody who lives nearby volunteer to have it on their property. This is such an easy solution. People are so dang stupid. I would if I was in the position to have a government building near me. This is getting ridiculous. I think both sides love the attention otherwise we would not go through this year after year.
There is a Menominee, Wisconsin as well.
I think the atheists should be able to display a large ZERO, since they believe in nothing.
“Come all ye faithful”.....nuts to the atho’s!
