If there was a free, easy way to send a message of support directly to troops for Thanksgiving would you do it?
Yes? Well, get out your cell phone.
The Department of Defense is offering an instant text messaging service to put Americans in touch with U.S. soldiers who are protecting them abroad during the holiday season.
Those who wish to participate can send a free text message to say thanks to 89297 and will immediately get a response from a soldier on their phone. (I did it and received five heartfelt responses within a few minutes.)
This free texting service is provided through AT&T, Verizon, Sprint Nextel, and T-Mobile and will expire on November 22.

Thanks for passing that on, texted away.
My pleasure, thanks for texting.
Hmmm, I have AT&T and I just tried it, and it says I need a 10-digit number to send the message, that 89297 does not work. Help?
Thanks, Vel.
Great idea.
Please ignore, I had the #s transposed! A-hyuck!
I have Tmobile and it worked for me.
You tried a text message, right?

Me, too. I’m not too good with texting; I’m old.
I thought it was great too and just heard of it on the radio here in Chicago.

Great idea! For any of our brave men and women overseas who read freerepublic, Thanks!!!!!! We miss you and hope you come home soon, we understand you’re making great progress and we are so proud of you. We love you all!!!!
What a nice service from corporate “biggies.” Thanks for the info.
Thanks for the heads up, Vel and T4B. Hopefully many FReepers will use this to contact our fine troops.
