THE NOTE: Hillary Inevitable No More?
ABC News ^ | Nov. 20, 2007 | RICK KLEIN with MIKE CHESNEY

Clinton’s Inevitability Evaporates in Iowa, while Thompson Fades Away

About that inevitability thing . . . just kidding.

Barely 50 days before Iowa, it matters about as much as Dick Cheney's approval ratings, or Barry Bonds' contract situation, or Robert Novak's newest secret source.

Ladies and gentleman, we have ourselves a race.

Toss out the 30-point lead in the national polls, the fundraising edge, the long list of endorsements, the bold predictions of Terry McAuliffe, Mark Penn, even Bill Clinton himself.

The new ABC News/Washington Post poll has Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., up on Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., in Iowa -- really in a statistical tie in the state where they could be playing for all the marbles. It's Obama 30, Clinton 26, and former senator John Edwards, D-N.C., 22 -- setting up a three-way scramble for the top spot in a state that's notoriously difficult to call in advance.

The worrisome signs for Clinton aren't so much in Obama's movement (and her lack thereof) as they are inside the numbers.

"A growing focus on fresh ideas coupled with lingering doubts about Hillary Clinton's honesty and forthrightness are keeping the Democratic presidential contest close in Iowa," ABC polling director Gary Langer reports.

"Most Democratic likely voters in Iowa, 55 percent, say they're more interested in a 'new direction and new ideas' than in strength and experience, compared with 49 percent in July -- a help to Obama, who holds a substantial lead among 'new direction' voters," Langer continues.

The comparable number favoring "strength and experience" is 33 percent.

“Obama v. Guilianni anyone?”

Sorry, but Mr. Inevitable (Rudy) is also no longer inevitable.

He has gone from 46% to 26%.

3/4's of the party is aligned against him.

All the rest of the candidates, Paul included, are bigger Men than that loser!

IMO it is true that the videos are made by lefties (@Huffington Post) to accuse the Republicans of using kids for political attacks as well as to try to discount the SwiftBoaters for Truth.

I’ve said it before, Hillary is the Democrats’ version of Bob Dole. Republicans won a huge victory in 1994 and had Bill Clinton on the ropes, then they stupidly nominated Bob Dole.

And the GOP hasn't learned their lesson yet as they relentlessly try to nominate the one candidate, Rudy, who will guarantee a Hillary Presidency.

Rudy, with his extreme liberal history/background, is the most ill-prepared Republican Candidate ever.

If he is nominated, whoever is the the Democrat presidential candidate will use Rudy's past as a club to beat him senseless in the eyes of the Republican Base of voters.

They will sit out the general election in droves or vote third party or simply not do all the necessary hard-leg-work necessary for a candidate to win.

Rudy is unelectable!

Yep, no one likes Rudy except the voters, including independents and many Democrats. We won’t be foolish enough to nominate someone like that. So go with Ron Paul — a man I personally wouldn’t vote for even to save the country from Hillary or Obama. Brilliant idea!!!

...for years everything was scripted. Total control. Image, smartest, womens rights....blah blah blah... Now...the cackling,screeching,wrinkles,....quick tempered, arrogance,on her own...(even with the MSM help)...is not playing very well for her thighness. Now all understand why her answers and questions must be scripted

I agree, but I sure want the dusty road to be as bumpy as possible. I hunger for the reaction from African-Americans when Hillary "steals" the nomination from Barry O.

“.... have had the sneaking suspicion for a long time that Hillary’s candidacy will implode when exposed to the electorate...”

Your suspicion was accurate and will stand the test of time.

It’s always been my contention that hillary started her campaign too early. Listening to that whiney voice lecturing us is enough to drive a pope to drink. Every sane person, when he gets into that voting booth, will ask himself this question: Do I really, really want to listen to a stupid woman lecturing me for 48 more months?

hillary is toast. And don’t forget to bring the jelly.

Imagine that. Perhaps the only thing stopping America from having its first black President is the Hildabeast. The Wicked Witch who has already lived in the White House for 8 long years.

God, I hope so.

I can’t believe this country would elect her.

"I’ve said it before, Hillary is the Democrats’ version of Bob Dole. Republicans won a huge victory in 1994 and had Bill Clinton on the ropes, then they stupidly nominated Bob Dole."

Dole could have hit Clinton hard on the character/sleaze aspect but was paralyzed with fear that the Clinton team would dig up dirt on him. Dole mumbling "whitewater" out of the side of his mouth at the debate was so pathetic and useless.

Thanks! We aim to please. Early days so far, but I hope to be able to interview some of the surviving key players, if I can find them before they shoot themselves twice in the back of the head.

Despite assertions to the contrary, Hillary has never really had much of a lead in Iowa... In fact, until just about a month ago she’d written the state off completely. She started polling better, and hired 100 new staffers in an attempt to make further inroads just days before her much-maligned debate performance. So much political reporting seems based on the hope that readers haven’t been paying attention. Hillary will be the nominee, and these news organizations trying to make it seem close in an attempt to raise ratings, circulation, or profits are going to look pretty silly.

I keep thinking the breck girl is going to pull ahead any day now. I can’t quite figure out who the republican candidate will be that will pull ahead.
