It seems gas mileage these days is worse than it was 10 years ago for some cars.
Honda Civics used to get close to 60 mpg.

I've seen them all over Europe. They are like road lice. But they do have a reinforced crash cage surrounding the occupants that makes it, allegedly, as safe as any typical car on the roads in the U.S. The only thing I can see as an advantage for one of these things is that you can parallel park it sideways (i.e. with the front or back facing the curb) because it is so short). Finding parking in Europe is a nightmare if you've ever driven over there so the sideways parking is a big, big selling point.
SUV's are the worse for small parking spots and yes some of their owners are idiots. My wife was at the hospital last year and a Tahoe owner parked 5 inches from my wifes car door. (The Tahoe parked in a sub compact spot). My wife had to crawl in through the passenger side of her car-harder that it sounds with bucket seats and a floor shift.
If my wife did not have a newer car she would have repeatdly slammed her door into the Tahoe to ding it up.
Is it true that it comes standard with dual body bags?

Also, the new Smarts are about eight inches longer than the older ones. I guess that the thinking was, if you want to sell small cars to Americans, they’d better be the biggest small cars around. (Just joking.)
Smart cars are great metro cars — it’s all about the parking.
A lady I work with has one. She gets fantastic mileage with it - over 40 mpg in mostly city use. She has also taken it on at least one long trip, down to Tenessee from here, the Toronto area. I regularly see them out on the highway where they manage 75-80 mph, and apparently would go even faster if not electronically limited. She drives it in the winter here, too, and it works surprisingly well - the engine is in the rear over the rear axle. They’re also fairly tall for their size so aren’t quite as invisible in traffic as you might think.
As far as crash safety goes, it has a very rigid safety cage built into its structure - the major thing it lacks is the room for any sizable crush zone to absorb impacts. It has very good seats, airbags, and seatbelts, however.
It’s not what I would choose to buy and drive, but I can see where it fills a niche for some people.

This is what we’ll be driving if Clinton and the RATS have their way. And.....we’ll probably be paying $6-$7 bucks a gallon. Meanwhile the RAT politicians will all be driving around in SUV’s, just like the Commies in Russia did.
I don't have the facts, but it seems like every time diesel starts to get popular in the US, the EPA nails diesel cars with stifling regulations.

They better have lots of airbags. If you were in an accident much over 30 mph what was left of you would be buried in your car.
They may not be for you, but I like ‘em. They are super-cute! Of course, when I make my Costco trips or we take the family with dogs to the park, we drive a behemoth (of course!)
