“In fact, pastors at my church have called it a cult.”

How intolerant. I went to Catholic school for 12 years (1-12) and had many discussions and debates about different religions during that time. Not once was there a reference or statement from the priests or teachers that Mormonism was a cult. Cult = a cohesive social group devoted to beliefs or practices that the surrounding culture considers outside the mainstream. I guess that pretty much describes Catholics, jews, quakers, Methodists, Seventh Day Adventists, Calvinists..well, you get my drift.

Typically meaningless, now give us the official Catholic position on the Mormon church.

What you misunderstand is the meaning of the word cult in this context, which is a sect claiming to be Christian, but at its core is not. This is a theological term based on doctrine, and should not be equated with calling LDS a Jonestown in the making. Depending on the commentator, Quakers, Methodists, Calvinists would be Christian. Jehovah Witnesses, Mormons, Reverend Ike & Father Divine would not me. There are opinions on both sides of 7th Day Adventists, though I would put them in the Christian camp. Judaism, like Islam and Shinto are a different religion and not not considered cults.

Great book on this is Kingdom of the Cults by the late Walter Martin.

Here’s how you can tell it is a cult. Go here and read this thread by ex-Mormons, take note of the devastation and suicidal tendencies they note:

There’s a whole website full of such accounts. If you can find another denomination that has such a sad website of ex-believers, let me know. Salt Lake is the Prozac capital of the US. Here’s another interesting account:
