A Day in the Life of President Bush (with photos): 11-17-07

Enjoy your visit to Sanity Island

PHOTO OF THE DAY (from yesterday's National Adoption Day at the White House)

QUOTE(s) OF THE DAY

From the President's Radio Address ~~ November 17, 2007

Excerpt:

"Good morning. In a few days, our Nation will celebrate Thanksgiving. Like millions of Americans, members of Congress will travel home for the holiday. Unfortunately, as they get to work carving their turkeys, they're leaving a lot of unfinished work back in Washington, D.C. And unless they complete this work soon, middle-class Americans will pay higher taxes and American troops will not receive the critical funding they need to fight and defeat our enemies.

Many middle-class taxpayers will face higher tax bills unless Congress acts on the Alternative Minimum Tax, or AMT. The AMT was designed to ensure that the wealthy paid their fair share of taxes. But when Congress passed the AMT decades ago, it was not indexed for inflation. As a result, the AMT's higher tax burden is creeping up on more and more middle-class families."

*snip*

On Wednesday, the House passed a bill that once again has Congress directing our military commanders on how to conduct the war in Iraq as a condition for funding our troops.

We do not need members of Congress telling our commanders what to do. We need Congress listening to our military commanders and giving them what they need to win the war against extremists and radicals.

Congress knows I'll veto this bill. During this time of war, our troops deserve the full support of Congress -- and that means giving our troops the funding they need to successfully carry out their mission. I urge Congress to work quickly and send me a clean bill so we can fulfill our obligation to our brave men and women in uniform."

Just think of the difference between the two men that will be displayed in every photo, and smile.

Algor will look like a stuffed turkey, and President Bush will be his normal GQ self. Also, PRESIDENT Bush is the host, and Algor is the momentary guest. Many reasons to smile!

"Hope things are much improved with your hubby."

It has been five weeks since his emergency cardiac surgery. After three weeks in the hospital and two weeks at a cardiac rehab facility, he is doing amazingly well and he may come home next week. We are so blessed. Thanks for asking.

It is a shame that the photo of the First Lady is not a better one as her hairstyle and outfit looks so lovely today not that she does not always dress well but today she looks especially good.

THANK YOU for posting a mini-DOSE tonight . . . It was just a few weeks ago that I was sitting in our President’s pew at St. John’s; unfortunately, he wasn’t there at the time!

POLLS ARE POLLS AND BEEF IS BEEF
In terms of the economy and the more recent war effort, the beefs have it.
By Thomas E. Nugent

The adversaries of President George W. Bush are having a hard time dealing with the fact that the economy continues to do well: a 3.9 percent jump in GDP for the third quarter, a 4.9 percent increase in productivity, surprisingly low inflation, and booming exports even though “everybody around the world really hates us.” At the same time, tax-revenue data have been impressive. Since the Bush tax cuts of 2003, tax revenues have been surging (and the deficit falling) alongside an expanding economy.

And still, Bush supposedly has done a bad job with the economy, and other matters, or so we hear. “Where’s the beef?” the detractors ask, and when they find some beef they say it’s rancid. But I want to ask the detractors this very same question. “Where’s your beef?”

AT TROOP COMMENCEMENT, A TIME FOR IRAQI OPTIMISM
By Leila Fadel | McClatchy Newspapers
Posted on Sunday, November 18, 2007

BAGHDAD — In the expanse of grey desert east of Baghdad, an Iraqi Army brigade marched Sunday in matching boots and uniforms with M-16 rifles slung over their shoulder, showing off their new formation to Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki.

The ceremony marked the first time an Iraqi brigade had made it to graduation as a fully trained and equipped unit, and dignitaries portrayed it as a milestone. When a second brigade completes training, about 4,000 Iraqi soldiers will be added to Baghdad, freeing four Iraqi battalions to return home and fill holes left by a nearly year-long campaign to secure the capital.

“This will increase the combat strength of the Iraqi Army throughout the country,” said Lt. Gen. James Dubik, commander of the Multi-National Security Transition Command.

. . . At the end of the ceremony Maliki declared himself, the government and Iraq a success, but warned the recruits.

“You have been taught the importance of the chain of command, you are not to be influenced in any way by any who are outside your chain of command,” he said. “Leave politics to politicians ... you as military men, as soldiers, as heroes have the responsibility to protect the state so that all may live in peace whether they are in harmony or have differences.”

As he finished his speech and began to walk away, about 2,000 young men surrounded him waving their unloaded weapons in the air. “With our soul, with our blood we will die for you Iraq,” they chanted. Maliki shook his fist in the air and mouthed the words quietly.
