A good and thoughtful analysis by Hugh Hewitt.

Bump.

The despicable push-polling in Iowa is emblematic of the desperation of folks whose candidate couldn't or wouldn't outwork Romney and see their sole salvation in an alliance with pure unadulterated bigotry.

The race is between Rudy and the rest of the Republican party. Rudy will never get enough delegates to win the nomination on the first ballot. It will be a brokered convention, which weighs in favor of Thompson more than Romney. Hewitt underestimates Thompson’s strength in the South, the Rep national power base.

Rudy will get some of his backers to slyly slip just enough money to Huckabee to help him make a challenge to Romney and blunt his (and Fred’s) showings in IA/NH/SC.

If Rudy or Romney gets to be the Republican nominee for POTUS, we will just have one party, “The Republicrat Party”.

The Republican base hates the MSM with a passion

Can't speak for anyone else, but I hate the MSM a lot more than that.

"Hugh's correct. The race is now between Romney and Guiliani."

Uh, that's not what he said. With Fred garnering the NRLC endorsement (arguably the biggest of it's kind) and strong rumors that the NRA may soon endorse him, Mitt might want to keep his receipts so he can get a refund from those TV & radio stations and newspapers. IMO, both Rudy and Mitt are unelectable, for very different reasons (corruption, morals and issues w/Rudy, Mormonism and flip/flopping for Mitt). It is sad that many can't see past a man's religion, but there it is. Everyone here knows that Hugh Hewitt is 100% behind Mitt Romney, and that's fine, it's a free country. But wishing for something doesn't make it so....

If the race goes down to the wire, I don’t think there’s any doubt that Fred will carry Texas in the Primary.

If Mitt or Rudy are the rinos choice, I believe the conservatives will split from the liberal GOP and vote third party or not at all. The rino GOP is as ignorant as the liberal left when it comes to understanding the truth about winning elections.
So be it.

Hugh's correct. The race is now between Romney and Guiliani.

Hew Hewitt also fell for Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has been a complete disaster for the California GOP, not to mention State finances.

Hewitt has jumped the shark. This pair of RINOs will do the same thing to the GOP nationally as Arnold did to California.

I think that it should be pointed out that Hewitt has been shilling for Romney since last spring.

The purpose of the article is to rule out the real conservatives and say, Who would you rather have, Romney or Giuliani?

Well, if you put it that way, Romney is better than Giuliani. But why should you, when he still has low numbers in most polls, despite spending more than anyone else?

So, the chief purpose of the article is to persuade people to ignore Fred and the others, especially Fred.

I think I’d rather wait a little longer before I throw in the towel.

“Hugh’s correct. The race is now between Romney and Guiliani.”

I don’t believe that and the polls don’t show that.

Currently, there is Rudy and a four way tie among more conservative candidates. That means 70+% support for a more conservative candidate. One of those four will be the nominee.

Which? A lot depends upon the money they raise and how they portray themselves. Objectively, Thompson should win. Romney has the Mormon albatross around his neck, which erodes his support among the Republican base, and worse, his former liberal positions he took while in MA.

Huckabee has good positions, but has taken some pro-amnesty and big government positions in the past.

The article gets McCain right. He’s a media darling who will drop out after the NH primary. The big question, which no one has asked on this thread, is where will that 10-12% support go? Hewitt thinks it will go to Guiliani. Maybe some of it. I think others will go to the next best horse, either Romney or Thompson. So after Romney wins IA and NH you have Romney perhaps even with Rudy and Fred right behind going into SC. I expect Fred to win that.

Don’t forget there will be more debate between now and then and people will pay more attention as the primary gets closer.
