BY ERIKA BERAS eberas@MiamiHerald.com Rudy Giuliani's presidential committee on Wednesday morning unveiled its national campaign, dubbed ''Viva Rudy,'' to reach the nation's Hispanic voters.
The Miami event kicked off with an 11 a.m. news conference at La Carretta restaurant on Bird Road in Westchester. There was a similar event in Orlando.
Giuliani was not present.
Several local politicians and public officials were on hand to endorse the former New York City mayor.
A 30-inch-by-50-inch Viva Rudy sign hung on the wall in a private second-floor room.
State Rep. Rene Garcia, statewide Hispanic chairman for Giuliani's campaign, was at the event.
''The Hispanic community has long been forgotten in many elections. In 2000, we realized how important the Hispanic vote is,'' he said.
Fifteen supporters were in the room.
''He believes in education and helping our children complete globally,'' Miami-Dade School Board member Marta Perez said.

"Excuse me while my stomach turns. He certainly won't get my vote.
Viva Maximiliano!
Any candidate that panders to voters based on their ethnicity is...
Rudy sucks,He just lost any chance of a vote from me!!
I think if Rudy loves the hispanics so much he should go to Mexico"
I remember the Viva!Bush T-shirts in the last election. Doesn’t bode well, does it?
“Viva Bush” might’ve (barely) worked in ‘00/’04, but the country’s in quite a different mood these days. Bad timing for Rudy. ...which of course is good timing for the GOP.
A vote for Rudy is a vote for Shamnesty, liberal judges, abortion and everything else that Hitlery Clintoon supports.
My goodness, hispandering is bad enough, but can’t he be a little more creative?
Viva! is sooo 2004, do any of these guys have an ounce of originality in them?
“Viva Comorra!”
Dollars to donuts that some of Pete Wilson’s old staff are putting this crap on, maybe Arnold’s people
I don’t think this is really directed at Hispanic voters in general. Taking into account the dateline “Miami,” for the start-up of this campaign, I think it is just the usual GOP strategy to solidify the Cuban bloc, and make sure Florida stays red.
“Dollars to donuts that some of Pete Wilsons old staff are putting this crap on,”
I doubt this too. You can knock ole Pete for lots of things, but not, I think, for “pandering” to Hispanics.
Wilson, in fact, did the reverse of pandering to Latinos. It was Wilson’s sponsorship of Prop. 187 (and the famous “they keep coming” ads) that lost the Republicans any shot at the Hispanic vote. Gave that vote to the Dems and the CA GOP has yet to regain their position with that group.
I worked on one of his campaigns. They used to do this stupid VIVA crap all the time.
Matthew Dowd?
“Viva” is also be Italian.
They may be slighted that it is being characterized as hispanic.
VIVA JulieAnna!!!!
I get so confused with this cross-dressing RINO. Really hard to tell who he is pandering to at a given moment. NASCAR fans, RINOS, red-necks, society types, dems, pro-abort people, anti-abort people, etc, etc, etc. No one is safe from Julie Annie’s pandering.
It is good that Rudy is trying to get the hispanic vote back. President Bush won 40% of the hispanic vote in 2004, but then it dropped to about 20% in 2006. IMO that is why we lost so badly in 2006.
I hope Mitt and Fred have a hispanic outreach too, just like they should for evangelicals, women and seniors. We will need them in 2008.
It looks like the Bush team.
