EVANSVILLE, Indiana (AP) — Federal agents raided the headquarters of a group that produces illegal currency and puts it in circulation, seizing gold, silver and two tons of copper coins featuring Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul.

Agents also took records, computers and froze the bank accounts at the "Liberty Dollar" headquarters during the Thursday raid, Bernard von NotHaus, founder of the National Organization for the Repeal of the Federal Reserve Act & Internal Revenue Code, said in a posting on the group's Web site.

The organization, which is critical of the Federal Reserve, has repeatedly clashed with the federal government, which contends that the gold, silver and copper coins it produces are illegal.

AP and CNN got it wrong. The raid was Wednesday morning, not Thursday.

"If he thinks that fiat money is worthless, then why accept it for his coins?"

He is only 'accepting' it for a few minutes, until he places an order for gold with NY Mint. This is the same thing that Kuwait is doing with their oil; they dojn't hang onto the dollars, they immediately place a gold order, which is why the price of gold rises every night. The dollar is in freefall.

"It’s funny, if Ron Paul’s name wasn’t mentioned, this thread would be about how the government shouldn’t have raided the business. lol"

Liberty dollars are not dollars, that’s why they’re illegal. It’s called counterfeit.

The reason cashiers don’t take FRN’s until you show them one has nothing to do with a grand conspiracy, it has to do with the fact they aren’t very bright, which is probably why they are working as cashiers in the first place.

Your gold bullion coin can be used as money as soon as you SELL it...which is true with any investment or hedge.

Good on them! The Government should seize this gold and silver. American citizens can’t just take gold that they own and trade it freely with other citizens as if it were money, the Government hasn’t decided that you can use this as money therefore by definition you’re not allowed to do so.

Hell, even using the term “seize” is being generous to these currency terrorists, all gold and silver everyone belongs to the Government if they should choose to claim it in the name of the greater good of society. Claiming something that rightfully belongs to you isn’t “seizing” it. It’s just Uncle Sam making a housecall.

"Liberty dollars are not dollars, that’s why they’re illegal."

They're not illegal; the word 'dollar' is not copyrighted; it's in common use world wide as a local unit of exchange.

"It’s called counterfeit."

No, to be a counterfeit, it has to attempt to look like another that is the 'real thing.'

This is just a fear tactic to temporarily drive down the price of gold. In a way, I'm loving it, because if it drops much more, I'm going to buy up a bumch!

Go ahead, but the time to buy gold was about 3-4 years ago.

OK let me rephrase - they’re not legal tender.

I couldn’t care less if Ron Paulites want to use the damn things...but try buying a car with one, or depositing them into your bank account, or buying anything aside from something being sold by a Ron Paulite and you’ll see the problem.

You should be paranoid if you are minting your own currency and selling it to others as legal tender.

If you print your own money, that looks nothing like legal US currency, and a merchant with full knowledge and awareness accepts that currency, where is the crime???

Liberty Dollars are not forced on anyone. Merchants make a consious choice to accept them. Again, where is the crime?

I think we have not heard the full story here. There is nothing illegal with a barter system in the US.

Actually, I think it was the way this company marketed them, as if they were some real substitute for money instead of a novelty, that does have value, that people can barter all they want but still isn’t legal tender.

THAT is the problem, I think.
