I'm pinging Cheverus for his comments -- he has more inside knowledge than I do.
As for O'Malley, I don't know. I have no reason to believe he's not pro-life, though his supposed anti-gay marriage position seems to me somewhat weakened by he fact that his top lay advisor had a pro-gay marriage column printed in one of the papers.
I guess I'm a little surprised that he mentioned the Dems by name, especially where it's obvious his heart lies with the Dems -- except for that pesky pro-abortion stance they insist on. In MA, however, who are we going to vote for? The MA Republican party, a few years ago, was seriously planning to put a pro-abortion plank in the state Republican platform.
I'm in Boston, so Republicas seldom run, though there are a few anti-abortion local Dems. The last Republican candidate for governor did a commercial describing her enthusiastic support for abortion.
You mentioned earlier that he's unpopular because of closing so many parishes, and I've mentioned elsewhere that awful letter read in the local churches listing the order in which the remaining parishes would be closed, as if he's meant to preside over the orderly liquidation of the archdiocese.
What bothered me most about the parish closings (and I wasn't directly affected) is that AFAIK he never expressed and sorrow about the need to close them, going so far as to lock students and teachers out of a Catholic school slated to be closed -- on what would have been the last day of school because he was afraid they'd make a scene. He seems to be a bit lacking in people skills to say the least!
You know he's implacably opposed to the TLM -- going so far as to attempt to stop one properly scheduled for 9/14 until he was told they'd go to the press.
I've never known anyone who was all good or all bad. No reason to think O'Malley is an exception. Though one would think an anti-abortion stance in a Catholic bishop would be too basic to be praiseworthy. He's probably not a murderer or an arsonist either, but it wouldn't occur to me to think he should get a medal for it!
;-)
Considering the actions of those who 'occupied' St. Joseph's for months, O'Malley was probably right.
