BASTROP (TV8) - Since the events in Jena, there have been a number of reported incidents involving nooses across America--in schools, offices, even on a college campus.
Tonight, a newspaper is in dutch over just such a graphic in one of its own ads.
TV8's Dustin Barnes has the story.
Bastrop Councilwoman Betty Olive got calls from her constituents after this ad appeared in friday's issue of The Daily Enterprise Newspaper.
Betty Olive says "Certainly at this particular time, that caught the eyes of a lot of readers and they expressed their concerns.
The copy for the newspaper's advertising office includes a graphic of a hangman's noose, and calls on businesses to display their services in the paper.
The copy reads that advertising with the enterprise is more profitable that "hanging" around waiting on customers to show up.
Betty Olive says when other city council members were contacted by constituents, they decided to act.
Olive says "The council responded by writing a letter, letting the editor know how we felt about it."
The council members write that ..."it is incumbent upon us to ask that another emblem is used to promote advertisement."
Bastrop Daily Enterprise Editor Mark Rainwater says last Saturday was the last time the noose ad appeared in the paper. He says the ad had been used for about four years and only used to fill a blank space in that section.
Rainwater says after getting a bunch of calls - and at the request of the council members - the paper decided to remove the offending graphic.
Mark Rainwater says "It might not have had the same connotations as it does today, and that's certainly something we could understand and agreed with and that's why we made the decision.
A new ad is now in place, making the noose, a thing of the past.
In Bastrop, Dustin Barnes, TV8 News
Editor Mark Rainwater adds they made the decision to drop use of the offending graphic Friday night, but it appeared in Saturday's paper because that section had already been printed.
“in dutch” ????
The noose issue is merely a way to get hate crime legislation passed.
The use of commas, when done correctly, can be effective, but in this case, slightly overdone, by the newscaster.
Awwww, they should have a noose-wing in the Federal Pen for all those dangerous enough to even THINK the noose-thought./ rolling eyes
Anything to push their “hate crimes” agenda, diversity, etc.
Don’t those breast cancer ribbons look like nooses?
Sarc.
Sow now a noose is a racist symbol? What, no white people were ever hung?
Was this a “filler” run by the newspaper? Like a “Contact us as 555-5555 to advertise on this page” blurb?
No noose is good noose.
What did the dutch do? I demand my day of compensation on their behalf.
Such as this one:
Bastrop Daily Enterprise Editor Mark Rainwater says last Saturday was the last time the noose ad appeared in the paper. He says the ad had been used for about four years and only used to fill a blank space in that section.
How many white people are gonna be legally assaulted because of this?
Or it could mean they are going to stick a finger in the problem to plug it up.
I don’t know that there are any dykes in Bastrop...well, there IS that federal prison...
Stupid ad by paper. Unconstitutional meddling by the politicians.
I'm offended!
FR should add a new topic category: “Nooses”.
