Ron Paul Finds Fans, Funds on the Fringe

WASHINGTON (AP) — Those who dismissed Rep. Ron Paul as a joke in the Republican presidential primary campaign aren't laughing so hard these days.

The Texas libertarian's rise in the polls and in fundraising proves that a small but passionate number of Americans can be drawn to an advocate of unorthodox proposals such as returning to the gold standard and abolishing the income tax, CIA and Federal Reserve.

Paul, 72, recently set a one-day, online GOP presidential fundraising record, and pulled slightly ahead of Fred Thompson and Mike Huckabee in a New Hampshire poll, where he had 8 percent of the Republicans' support. In Iowa, he tied John McCain for fifth place, with 4 percent each.

Paul remains a very long shot for the nomination. But as the only Republican candidate backing a prompt troop withdrawal from Iraq — and an airing of possible impeachment charges against Vice President Dick Cheney — he appeals to a mix of liberals and conservatives who feel alienated and deeply distrustful of the government.

"Where the extreme left and the extreme right meet, you'll find Ron Paul," said Merle Black, an Emory University political scientist and co-author of the book "Divided America."

"Where the extreme left and the extreme right meet, you'll find Ron Paul"

Great! America's own Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact... Paul unites our own Hitlerites and Stalinists and calls it the Ron Paul Revolution.

Come on Paulestinians, tell me about on Paul's Reaganite positions on the issues!

What do you want to know?

I think Reagan would be for a gold standard,(sound money) abolition of the IRS and the general shrinking of the government.

One question: Did Reagan ever unite the extreme left with the extreme right? You bet your @$$ he never did... But if you could understand that distinction you would not be a Ron Paul.

In Iowa, he tied John McCain for fifth place, with 4 percent each.

OOOOOoooooooooh. That'd be worth, like, a great, whopping... ZERO delegates, right there!

Paulestinians: it's like they're really, really smart... only, y'know, not. ;)

Well, maybe the 'Left' is seeing the light!

Don't you want to convert them?

How many Democrats voted for Reagan when he won in a landslide-those rotten liberals!

Was there some vote that I am not aware of?

Now there is cause to cheer!

The “Democrats {who} voted for Reagan” were NOT the extreme left... they were not even the left. They were “law and order”, “America right or wrong” Americans. Like Reagan they felt “the Democrat party left them.”

ronpaul makes the exact same error as McCain, Rudy and others who adopt one or more liberal policy to try to broaden their “base.” Problem is, when it comes right down to it, liberals will ultimately vote for a real liberal, not a pretend one who straddles the line. ronpaul’s fringists will ultimately vote for a antiwar candidate who supports all their socialist goals (or they will hold their noses and vote hillary).

No, but there are (evidently) simple rules of grammar of which you are blissfully unaware. "That'd be worth" is NOT -- sit down, please; I don't want you fainting on me -- present tense. Duh.

Once again: "Paulestinians: it's like they're really, really smart... only, y'know, not." ;)

Jim Quinn on XM now talking about how most of his support is coming from “Blue” areas in Chicago, SF, etc.

Now discussing the call on Ron Paul sites for people to switch parties TO Republican so that they can vote for RP in the primaries.

4.2 million in one day, laugh at that.

Who else has raised that much in day (in small donations and not from PACS or special interests)

And he is drawing crowds of more than 3000 (Philly) on a cold wet day.

70,000 meet-up members and that number is growing everyday.

And having more subscribers on YouTube than any other candidate, and if I'm not mistaken, more than all the other candidates combined.

All that DESPITE being ignored by the mainstream media, who has already selected Their Approved Candidate.

Who are you supporting and has he had a 4 million dollar grassroots day? Does he inspire passion in people?

Allow me to laugh now. ;-)

“he appeals to a mix of liberals”

I am one of those conservatives who often tunes in Air America just to have fun listening to the lunatics, and I can’t tell you how many times callers to the programs say they are are supporting Ron Paul, or how many of them are hoping for a third party Kucinich/Paul ticket. The host of these shows also speak favorably of Ron Paul. I have never heard one of them say anything negative about RP like they do with all of the other GOP candidates. That should worry you conservative Ron Paul supporters very much. Do you really want to support a guy who has so much appeal to those on the Left?

I think Reagan would be for a gold standard,(sound money) abolition of the IRS and the general shrinking of the government.

Reagan specifically rejected the gold standard according to the recommendation of a commission he formed to study the idea. I don't think he ever said anything about abolishing the IRS. He was president for eight years so he had his chance. He was for less federal government, but generally he was pro government. In other words, he wasn't an Anarchist or Libertarian.

That should worry you conservative Ron Paul supporters very much.

"That should worry you tiny winged unicorns very much."

"That should worry Rosie O'Donnell's personal diet instructor very much."

"That should worry Space Ghost very much."

All of these sentiments share a common theme. ;)
