The parents of more than 2,300 Prince George's County students who failed to get needed vaccinations could face fines of $50 a day and up to 10 days in jail if their children do not meet the state's immunization requirements, county officials said yesterday.
The threat of legal action is a last resort after months in which Prince George's has struggled to get its 131,000 students immunized for chicken pox and hepatitis B, as mandated by the state.
More than 2,300 students have not been immunized and have been barred from attending schools, almost two months after a Sept. 20 deadline for meeting the requirement.
"We can do this the easy way or the hard way, but it's got to get done," Prince George's State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey (D) said at a news conference in Upper Marlboro.
"I'm willing to move forward with legal action." School officials have made calls, sent letters and conducted home visits to make arrangements for free appointments for the needed shots.
But often the students' addresses and phone numbers have been outdated, making contacting them difficult. Other students have received the vaccines but failed to get the necessary booster shots.
The school system turned to the justice system as a final option and received the backing of Circuit Judge William D. Missouri, the county's administrative judge, and Circuit Judge C. Philip Nichols Jr., who handles juvenile matters.
"This is an educational crisis," said R. Owen Johnson Jr., chairman of the school board. "This is a public health and a children's rights issue."

This is NOT new.
So much for opting out.....
You knew that option would go sooner or later.
Where I live it is all local school districtsrun by locals and funded by local votes. No votes for levies, no funds.
If they tried this here there would be a revolt.

“I thought chicken pox was was what you got when you were vaccinated against small pox.”
You are thinking of cowpox.
A lot of people have learned to distrust the health care system. Go figure, but they don't want treatment of any kind forced on themselves or their children. Somehow, they got the notion that they are free adult Americans who can make their own choices about what's best for their families and what will be put into their children's bodies.
So, we would have to conclude that the chicken-pox vaccine is exactly how useful?
And therefore, why is the vaccine preferable to actually getting the disease, whichunlike the vaccineeffectively confers immunity to future infection?
And all will become one with the BORG! (Except of course those who correctly chose to leave).
>chicken pox and hepatitis B
Let’s see. Tossing parents in jail for not getting their kids a vaccine for, respectively:
>1) A disease that’s virtually harmless when you get it, for which the vaccine doesn’t work, long-term.
Except when you’re an adult it’s not harmful. Children aren’t the only people at schools.
>2) A disease that you can’t get unless you take recreational drugs intravenously or get sodomized on a regular basis. A vaccination against Hep B wouldn’t be a necessary precaution for most kids.
You’re thinking of Hep C, not Hep B. Hep B is caught from either blood or stool and is passed along really easily because kids don’t always wash their hands and they’re always getting cuts and scrapes.
>But the important thing is that numerous local contractors depend for their income on giving vaccines and boosters against trivial or obscure diseases, and public school children represent a key market segment. So their contacts and friends on the school board and the local family court bar have no choice but to stand in solidarity with them.
So, for your new hat, should the foil be made out of aluminum, tin or steel?
Your implication is that there is a connection between your paying taxes and your use of the school. That association is specious. You pay your taxes (property taxes to your county or township, plus state and federal taxes). You do this because (ultimately) they will shoot you if you don’t.
Some of these taxes finance government schools. Some finance defense, highways, welfare, foreign aid, etc., etc.
You have no choice in paying the taxes. You have no say, except for your vote for representatives, in how the revenue is used. You have no input into the conditions for use of any government-provided “service” you choose to use.
The issue of vaccines required in government schools is no different from the issue of curriculum, graduation standards, quality of teachers, scheduling, or any other disputed point. Users of the service are at the mercy of the provider.
Que? No habla gabacho.
All these parents have to do is “start” a religion which forbids these immunizations.” End of story....

They even now know variant alleles allows one susceptibility to the reaction. I think HLA DR3 on chromosome 6 was one of them.
But will the district test to see which kids will likely get the reaction from the Hep B vaccine?
Thing is, these parents that think they know what’s best for their children are not trained medical professionals nor have even a slight knowledge about medicine.
I would guess that illegals make up a large proportion of the group targeted.
How about the fact that my nephew was severely brain damaged by his DPT shot, and at 23, functions like a toddler?
When I was a child and someone in our school came down with chicken pox or measles most of the moms would send their kids over to play with the infected kid. Everybody got it and then the moms would rely on home remedies to treat it.
Worked great.
If I had small children today I definitely would not have them vaccinated. The solution in which the vaccine is delivered contains some pretty weird stuff.
