Arkansas House Minority Leader Writes Letter to Clarify Huckabee Tax Video from 2003
Arkansas Journal ^ | November 13, 2007 | Johnny Key

I am concerned that correct information is not being distributed in the blogosphere, so I wanted to give you some historical perspective in order to correct some of the comments that have been posted to arkjournal... This speech had nothing to do with the Lakeview case or education spending. The $100 million target was for general revenue. This speech occurred a few weeks after a group of Republicans and conservative Democrats (current Speaker Petrus among them) refused to extend the regular session over disputes on taxes, thus shutting down the session without a budget plan. A 2/3 vote was required to extend the session, which would have given House leadership time to round up the votes necessary to pass a tax increase. We maintained about 36-37 votes against extending, despite tremendous pressure and arm-twisting on the Democrats in our group...The education taxes and spending came later in a special session that began in 2003 and extended into 2004.

Ironically, the same day this speech was given, President Bush was a few blocks away giving a policy speech on the need for tax cuts and how they would boost the economy. He was right.

The Arkansas House Minority Leader sent this letter to a local blog today in order to clarify some claims made by the Huckabee campaign in response to the video which surfaced yesterday showing Huckabee begging for a tax increase back in 2003. Many pro-Huckabee supporters have been flooding the internet with claims that Huckabee's request for "any" tax increase the legislature wanted to give him was required by the Arkansas Supreme Court as a part of the Lakeview decision. Apparently that is not true and the Minority Leader of the Arkansas House of Representatives wanted everyone to be clear on that fact.

Around 70,000 worldwide viewed the video yesterday since Matt Drudge posted it on his website.

To see the video, go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaJW7nXw30A

This thread might be way too detailed for many to want to delve into. But, as an Arkansas FReeper, I want to try to set the record straight on Huckabee as often as possible so that my fellow FReepers can make an informed decision when it comes to my former governor.

Huckabee was on Foxnews this morning to further promulgate the lie that the video that made its way around the web Monday showing him begging the Arkansas legislature for a tax increase was part of an Arkansas Supreme Court Mandate. This is an absolute lie, as the Arkansas Minority Leader clarifies in the letter posted above. Huckabee has sunk to a new low.

I echo RebT's sentiments - ping.

Thanks for this post.

I am not into religion of politics or maybe more accurately stated politics of religion, but there is an odor about his candidacy flaunting I AM closer to God business. When in fact he doesn’t mind one bit giving US the business.

Oh and lest I get one of the judge not lest I be judged sermons from Huckabeee followers, this is a result of testing the fruit.

I don’t think it is very complicated at all.

He begged for new taxes. Lied about the reason, blaming a non existent State Supreme court mandate.

Probably went back to Huckabee's campaign HQ in the trailer park home to get some talking points for a rebuttal. His award for "campaign shill of the year" is in jeopardy.
