According to Polls, Fred Thompson Foundering

The American electorate is a fickle mistress. Just ask former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.).

When Thompson announced his candidacy for president just after Labor Day most national polls showed him running a close second behind former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and the majority of state polls had him in the top three.

No longer. Thompson's campaign has yet to take off as expected and voters -- especially in crucial early states like Iowa, New Hampshire and Florida.

The most recent data comes from New Hampshire where two surveys were released over the weekend. The first, conducted by theUniversity of New Hampshire for the Boston Globe, put Thompson in sixth (yes, SIXTH) place with just three percent of the vote. (Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney led the way with 32 percent.) In a Marist University poll Thompson again took sixth place with just five percent support. To be clear, Thompson was never a frontrunner in New Hampshire but polls conducted in the run-up to his announcement and just after he formally entered the race show him regularly polling in double digits.

Thompson's shrinking support is apparent in other early states as well. The last three polls taken in Iowa put Thompson in fourth, fifth and fourth place, respectively, and his high water mark in any of those surveys is 11 percent. In Florida, too, Thompson appears to be fading. A new poll conducted for the Miami Herald and St. Petersburg Times showed Thompson in fifth place (eight percent) behind Giuliani (36 percent), Romney (19 percent), Arizona Sen. John McCain (12 percent) and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (nine percent).

I don’t view myself as qualified to completely answer your question since I can’t read Fred’s heart. However, I think people like Dobson who have indicated that they don’t believe Fred to be a Christian have plenty of evidence that they can rely on. And I have been amused by the hysterical reaction by some Freepers to these statements.

If your response to Petronski was in relation to me you are dead wrong. I do not support Mitt and would only vote for him if it came down to a choice between Mitt, Ron Paul, and Giuliani. My preferred candidate is Duncan Hunter. My second place candidate is Mike Huckabee - though I am uncomfortable with tendency to pander and big government tendencies. My third place choice is Fred Thompson who probably should be my second place choice except I just can’t stand the guy and I don’t think he particularily cares for religious conservatives either.

kevmo it’s not just “other than that.” conservatives wouldn’t like Hunter’s trade policy or his propensity towards pork spending.

Agitprops are here to create negatives not answer discussion points. FR is dripping with them from the Mittiac campaign lately ... and they appear to be a protected species, especially if they claim to be Mormon.

Why is completely Free Trade considered the conservative position. Isn’t this selling out America and America’s workers in favor of multi-national corporations like GE which would gladly sell us out the first chance they got.

This being said, I am not voting for Lord Protector, I am voting for President, so Thompson’s personal religious beliefs have no impact on my choice of candidate. His ideology does.
***And the context of the discussion is in trying to find out where the evangelical support would land, and why Dobson wouldn’t endorse Thompson. Of course, since he probably won’t endorse anyone, his lack of endorsement of Thompson might not hurt.

It does look like we agree that Intrade has data. I responded to data with data.

You wanna talk fruit, apples and oranges are fruit. You only wanna talk apples, the guy who likes oranges might have a thing to say about it, and it’s okay as long as he keeps calling them both fruit. You just did. So you can no longer tell me not to post data from Intrade.

That's a huge gigantic rationalization of the conflation and misdirection you've attempted on Free Republic all week. I guarandamntee you I will continue to call you on it as long as I have posting privileges.

so why are we arguing between Fred and Hunter supporters when we know both won’t get the nomination?
***That isn’t something we know. You can’t know the future. Intrade results are a datapoint, and they’re the most unbiased one I’ve found. This is the primaries. You support the guy whom you agree with the best. Then you support whoever gets the nomination, assuming he’s not a raving socialist. By examining the tea leaves of poll results more than a year before the election and listening to the MSM post their favored republican candidates, we have allowed them to define the process. I’m not going to do that. I’m sticking with my candidate until he is no longer asking for support, because my candidate is the best conservative in the race.
