This will probably kill his career, but I rise to praise Sen. Joe Lieberman, the independent Democrat from Connecticut.
In a speech last week before Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies, Lieberman said, "Since retaking Congress in November 2006, the top foreign policy priority of the Democratic Party has not been to expand the size of our military for the war on terror or to strengthen our democracy promotion efforts in the Middle East or to prevail in Afghanistan. It has been to pull our troops out of Iraq, to abandon the democratically elected government there, and to hand a defeat to President Bush."
Dictionary.com defines "patriot" this way: "a person who loves, supports, and defends his or her country and its interests with devotion." The key words are "defends his or her country and its interests with devotion." By this definition Joe Lieberman is a patriot.
Is it in America's interest to lose in Iraq? Is it in America's interest not to have a strong enough military in personnel and in weapons to defend us against the myriad threats confronting the country now and those that will likely confront it in the near future? Is it in America's interest to see Democratic politicians dedicated to making a lame duck president a dead duck, not supporting him in any way for partisan political reasons just to win the White House?
Lieberman doesn't think so, but he stands virtually alone among leading members of his party.
If you consider history, there were many Democrats who supported a vigorous foreign policy dedicated to protecting American liberties and encouraging them in other countries. Those Democrats rarely, if ever, criticized a president of either party for his foreign policies and ex-presidents mostly held their tongues when it came to criticizing

Liberman was for amnesty - not the act of a patriot.
Lieberman is an honorable man, no matter what any One-note Johnny says.
Lieberman is also a Gorebot: a true believer in the manmade global warming fantasy.
Joseph Lieberman, Harry Truman, and “Scoop Jackson” , and historical figure like them were not “democrats”. They were first, foremost and last AMERICANS. No matter how deeply they disagreed with their political adversaries, they spoke their thoughts, and cast their votes according to WHAT WAS BEST FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
Today’s “democrats” voice their beliefs and cast their votes according to what will HELP THE PARTY, never considering its effect on the United States. It is Lieberman, an AMERICAN who just happens to be a democrat who will stand tall in history.
Lieberman is filthy socialist - he believes in gay marriage, racism (disguised as diversity), higher taxes, and open borders. The GOP has lost its way and cuddling up to aholes like Lieberman shows just how far they have gone since Bush was elected.
How tragic for this country.
And unfortunately, he is better than all the Rats added together, and unfortunately, he is is more honest than most of the Global "plants" pretending that the Repos actually have a choice.
Some of the whack-jobs on this forum amaze me.
He is what you might term a member of the loyal opposition. I think he carries himself with a lot of class and probably more so than some of the people on these boards. I don’t agree with many of his positions but I feel no need to lump him in with Kerry, Pelosi or Kennedy.
Sigh...I know. One of about two Democrats in the country who want to win the war on terror, and people here call him names and trash the guy. That makes a ton of sense.
No surprise really. People eat their own every day for not thinking in lock step with one another.

Do you kiss your children with that mouth?
Now prove how “cuddling” up with a man who is regarded as a statesman by nearly every Republican in congress as well as the president is detrimental.
Well, then, I think we should all say bad things about him. Let’s alienate the one reliable vote we have on the other side of the aisle.
Lieberman introduced the bill to permanently close ANWR to oil development.
But kudos to Joe on this particular issue. - Tom
I recently finished reading "John Adams" by David McCullough and during the estrangement between Adams and Jefferson one of the worst insults one could level against the other was that they were putting "party" before the country.
