Middle-Class Dream Eludes African American Families
Washington Post ^ | 13 November 2007 | Michael A. Fletcher

Posted on 11/13/2007 6:28:17 AM PST by shrinkermd

Nearly half of African Americans born to middle-income parents in the late 1960s plunged into poverty or near-poverty as adults, according to a new study -- a perplexing finding that analysts say highlights the fragile nature of middle-class life for many African Americans.

Overall, family incomes have risen for both blacks and whites over the past three decades. But in a society where the privileges of class and income most often perpetuate themselves from generation to generation, black Americans have had more difficulty than whites in transmitting those benefits to their children.

Forty-five percent of black children whose parents were solidly middle class in 1968 -- a stratum with a median income of $55,600 in inflation-adjusted dollars -- grew up to be among the lowest fifth of the nation's earners, with a median family income of $23,100. Only 16 percent of whites experienced similar downward mobility. At the same time, 48 percent of black children whose parents were in an economic bracket with a median family income of $41,700 sank into the lowest income group.

This troubling picture of black economic evolution is contained in a package of three reports being released today by the Pew Charitable Trusts that test the vitality of the American dream. Using a nationally representative data source that for nearly four decades has tracked people who were children in 1968, researchers attempted to answer two questions: Do Americans generally advance beyond their parents in terms of income? How much is that affected by race and gender?

"We are attempting to broaden the current debate" beyond the growing gap between higher- and lower-income Americans, said John Morton, Pew's managing director for program planning and economic policy. "There is little out there on the question of mobility across generations, and we wanted to examine that."

To piggyback on your statement-and how true it is-black women RAISE their daughters and LOVE their sons.

Always the same story for blacks and latinos - rich white corporate America keepin em down - give me a break. This is exactly why blacks continue to lag because they cant take any responsibility for their situation - always pointing the finger and never claiming responsibility.

I guess its time to start some riots and burn down the neigborhood if they dont get some freebies.

It goes on because white liberal teachers feel sorry for”those poor black children”and are sometimes even afraid of them.
On top of that, teachers are so fearful of lawsuits that effective discipline is limited.Back in my day,a few whacks from a paddle was totally acceptable.Nowadays the kid would want to fight you and the parent will want to sue you.

And WHO were these”other chicks”these black men were running around with? Most likely OTHER black women.
So its not JUST the fault of the black male.Women are half the problem too.

Can't argue with most of that but why would any woman want to let a man who is acting like a male nymphomaniac run the house anyway? That's my point. What would she end up with for her children?

All these roads pretty much lead to the same place and it's definitely a serious problem. Major point is, the Dems never mention it. They don't care. If they cared they would stop the lies that lead to their elite status in their dream socialist/commie state and really start helping people.

Ever hear of deception? Come on. Any man who wants to pick up a girl and lie to her can. Look at Scott Peterson...he almost got away with killing his pregnant wife while he was lying to his new girl. It appears to be rather easy, especially if your buddies give you pointers.

I'm not going to get into a gender war with you here, but the street has two sides and I'm sure it's not all the guy's fault. I'm not letting them off the hook tho. We are not the taliban.

The post WWII GI bill and the number of citizen soldiers who studied and became engineers and their children who became engineers really helped create the products and technology that helped this county develop its high economic level.

IIRC, isn't there a similar "GI Bill" up for the veterans of the current Afghanistan/Iraq conflict?

If you live in a culture that places more value on "keeping it real" than in education, where a young man is not forced by society's sneer into taking care of his out-of-wedlcok children (and for that matter, in which some of the most financially rewarded citizens get there for the incredibly important skill of being able to successfully, in rhythm, rhyme the work "whore") then I don't think the problem can realistically be laid at my doorstep for "keeping the brothers down."

There is no single predictor for a child living in poverty than the lack of a two parent household.

"It goes on because white liberal teachers feel sorry for”those poor black children”and are sometimes even afraid of them."

There are a disproportionate amount of minority teachers in the city..so your point is well off the mark. The schools I was talking about were 80% white anyway and the disruptors reflected that ratio. It's discipline that no one cares about any more. Culture corruption.

My daughter goes to a magnet school where half the population is black. These kids are there because they "get it", that without a good education, they are going to get nowhere in life. They get grades as good or better than she does, and she's gifted. It is all about what you decide you are going to value.

I always have to laugh...the Republicans were the ones fighting slavery, and the ones who say "you can make for yourself the best possible life by hard work and by getting education. We believe you can do just as well as anyone in the workplace by self-improvement and dedication. Go to it!" The Democrats seemingly carry the black community in their back pocket by saying, "you poor things! We know you can't possibly achieve what everyone else is expected to do! We will provide money so you don't have to learn how to be self-reliant, we will expect less of you to the point of forcing schools and employers to make special accomidations for you, and if you fail in the work place because we have taught you that you are really trying hard when you are only trained to do a slacker's job, we will blame the employer and help you sue." And of course, the Republicans are the Bad Guys.

Martin Luther King had it right...we should judge not on the color of your skin but on the contents of your heart. The sad thing is that the Democrats make us two Americas by playing on color. There are tens of thousands of black people who are living good lives, paying their taxes, and loving their kids, and they never make the news. Jessie and Al ensure that all we ever hear is the bad news.

In the old Futurama series, Bender the robot encourages a young child left in his care:

"What do we say when someone gives us something?" he asks.

"About time!" says his young ward.

That and there are the ones that keep feeding them dreams of the commie utopia that killed millions of people and always fails. Stupid marxists are ruining everyones lives.

Because if they focus too much on Asian-American success, it blows away the thesis that whites are evil racists keeping the black man down. If we’re such racists, and have the power to hold an entire race down, why haven’t we held Asians down? It should be easier since there are fewer Asians than blacks. Not to mention that there are no comparable Asian-American race agitators like Jesse & Al to defend Asians against us evil whites.

Bottom line...it's never about race or gender or religion or any of the things the Dems talk about all the time. Ultimately, it's about divide and and conquer and bringing down the Republic. What happens to the Hanoi Janes of America who want a commie caliphate if the American experiment actually works? Our two party system has morphed into Freedom lovers vs the world marxist party. Guess who controls the media?

I don’t even think the Democrats are even relevant to the problem anymore, although they do enable those in their constituency to remain dysfunctional.
Its the CULTURE that needs changing.Lots of this madness continued unabated under Reagan and the Bushes. The insanity transcends politics.

I concur.
My point is that in this day and age finding a suitable partner with whom to build a family with morals and uplifting values is extremely difficult.

Oh,for sure.Men need to shoulder a good proportion of the blame.
For young black people today, the playa is the role model. And do you know why young black males are often abusive and sexist toward black women?
Its because MOMS has been in”the game”too.
Believe this, its very painful to see a young black man, street hardened, break down in tears because he is so hurt from his mama “bringing home a different n**** every month”
I’ve seen that and much more I could not put up here on this board.
