BERKELEY, Calif. -- On Sunday evening a Memorial Oak Grove tree-sitter fell from the supply-line that is used to ferry food, water and people into and out of the tree-sit protest.
The traverse-line was created after the university erected a fence around the tree-sitters and spans from a tree inside the fenced in area to a tree outside the fence.
Nathaniel Hill, the fallen tree-sitter, was moving on the traverse line to meet his father, Carl Hill, who had come from the east coast to visit his son.
Hill was taken to Highland Hospital where he was treated for a broken arm above the wrist and a broken leg above the ankle.
"If the University had not put up the fence this wouldn't have happened," said Zachary Running Wolf, the organizer of the tree sit-in. "They created this situation where we have to move in and out of the grove on that traverse line."
University spokesman Dan Mogulof says the fall is not the university's fault.
"The accident is very regrettable but to state the obvious, completely avoidable," he said. "Things like this wouldn't happen if people who are illegally occupying university property were obeying the law."
Meanwhile, Judge Barbara Miller is set to render her decision any day on the legality of the university's expansion plans for the area.
The university also recently built a second fence surrounding the grove.
UC Police Chief Victoria Harrison said that the school built the new fence as a security measure prior to the forcible removal of the protesters from the trees.
Really. No doubt he's an "associate" member of some illustrious tribe.
I'm sure Mr. Hill must be very proud.
Who the heck has time to sit in a tree?
“If the University had not put up the fence this wouldn’t have happened,”
Boo hoo.
He was brousing some used book store off campus and found a copy of "Women Who Run with Wolves" and figured "Hey--it's worth a shot" and went to see the judge the next day for the name change.
Why don’t these nuts just leave the trees alone? Why don’t they branch out and get to the root of their problems? They may have a loud bark but not much bite. President Bush should get involved. But he may not have logged onto this story. Or he got the truncated version. Whatever, to the tree-nut, pining away up there, lifes a birch.
‘bout covers them all.
Change his nickname from Sparrow to Thumper.
“Whoa, dude. Watch out for that first step, man.”
If a tree sitter falls in the forest, will he leaf an impression on the ground? Did this happen in OAKlahoma? Hopefully; after the visit to the doctor, they spruced him up.
I bet the tree is happier now.
This tree sitter was a down to earth guy, especially there at the end. Ouch
“I once broke my leg below the ankle.”
I once shot an elephant in my pajamas.
the tree was probably just fed up with the smell from these dirty hippies..
I wonder, if they are in a tree, are they going to class?
“...and down will come Hippy, BO and all!”
I am snickering.
Screw the tree sitting business, I want to know who is footing the medical bills. You and Me?
if so, then I'm all in favor of whacking him up along side his broken leg with a bat after he gets out of the hospital...........
"Dude's gotta learn how to fall..."
“I fought the law...(Gravity)...and the Law won!”
What was the elephant doing in your pajamas?
