Opponents Let Loose On Former Mayor's Judgment
NEW YORK (CBS) ― On Friday Bernard Kerik surrendered to federal authorities on a 16-count indictment, including charges of conspiracy and corruption.
Now it's just a matter of time before we all see how much this case could plays a role in the race for president.
It was a courthouse drama that reverberated through the presidential race.
"This is a battle I'm going to fight," Kerik said.
Kerik, who served as Rudy Giuliani's police commissioner and business partner, pleaded not guilty to corruption charges carrying 142 years in prison time.
"It is a sad day when this office turns an indictment against a former law enforcement official, particularly one who served positions as high as Bernard Kerik," U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia said
Prosecutors unveiled $500,000 in gifts Kerik allegedly received. They detailed the lies he allegedly told to conceal the income from the IRS.
Giuliani was clear across the country Friday, but with less than two months to the Iowa caucuses, the Republican front-runner is facing criticism for promoting Kerik to a series of powerful jobs.
On Friday, Sen. John McCain attacked Giuliani over Kerik's performance training the Iraqi police.
"He stayed a couple of months, got up and left," McCain said. "That should have been part of anybody's judgment before they would recommend that individual to be head of the Department of Homeland Security."
Giuliani has responded this week by apologizing for pushing President Bush to nominate Kerik as homeland security chief.
His campaign had his supporters out in force Friday, casting the indictment as no big deal.
"Maybe the press is interested in those things but I think what the American people are focusing on is his record of accomplishment," former NYC Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro said.
But voters are still taking their measure of the candidates in this wide-open race.
And critics like former Mayor Ed Koch are smelling blood.
"Judgment! It's all a question of judgment and Rudy's judgment is flawed," Koch said.
Giuliani has admitted that he was briefed about some of Kerik's troubles before he named him police commissioner. The candidate says he can't recall what he was told in those briefings.
But it's opened him up to criticism not just of his judgment, but of his credibility as well.
This is news? How did they think he cleaned up New York City?
Only the very beginning.
This whole brew-ha-ha smells of Clinton’s war room. The Junior NY Senator is getting payback. Rudy is a real threat to her. SMEAR MACHINERY
Well I guess it was always going to be a battle between the Hildabeast and her Baggage and Rudys. So let it begin,We can star with the latest and go backward , Norman Hsu, Sandy Berger ,I would like to see her Memos to Bill about Waco when Bills Poll Numbers were dropping and what hillary told Bill to do in regards to murdering 80 american women and Children .
IIRC, Kerik was Giuliani’s driver in the beginning.....prior to that he was just a cop.....somehow, their relationship blossomed and kerik became more than just a cop as giuliani’s protege’
I can’t wait until ordinary NY cops start to talk about keriks days as a cop before he caught giuliani’s fancy....kerik is a maggot, and he’s been giuliani’s boy for a very long time, and some very meritous good cops in NY have been stomped on and passed over along the way...
what an insightful and lucid statement.
But not a word concerning Hillary's credibility and judgment hiring and confiding in the sock burgler!
i think so!!!!
I have no respect for Rudy, unlike you.
.......as to Kerik's filthy links to organized crime, "Me-First Giuliani" defended the tainted Kerik----Kerik was Giuliani's former driver, bodyguard and business partner.
"Me-First Giuliani" connived to shield himself from the fact that he had knowledge of, but ignored, Keriks filthiness. "I was not informed of it, "Save-My-Rear Giuliani" lied when asked if he had been warned about mobbed-up Kerik when he appointed Kerik to the top NYC police post in 2000.
But "Security Expert Giuliani" had tripped up royally trying to save himself, and was forced to amend the statement last year in testimony to a state grand jury.
"Forgetful Giuliani" the security expert said that neither he nor any of his aides could recall being briefed about Keriks mob involvements.
"Me-First Giuliani" was forced to acknowledge that the city investigations commissioner, Edward J. Kuriansky, had told him that Kerik was mob-connected at least once.
But a review of Mr. Kurianskys diaries, and investigators notes from a 2004 interview with Giuliani indicate that such a session indeed took place.
Even more significant:
According to Kurianskys diaries compiled at the time (plus Kuriansky's later recollection to investigators), Kuriansky recalled briefing Giulianis closest aides about Keriks dirty entanglements just days before Giuliani promoted his chauffeur, Kerik, (the man who knows where all of Giuliani's bodies are buried) to be the city's top cop.
Giuliani connived to foist Kerik on the Nation as Homeland/Sec/Secy b/c Kerik would have wholesale access to FBI files.
Kerik's surveillance of FBI files---then turning over useful info to Giuliani---would (1) materially advance Power-Mad Giuliani's political ambitions, and, (2) provide a HUGE financial bonanza to Giuliani's multiple global security businesses.
Come and get some!!! ;)
Pathetic. Ron Paul is supported by “truthers” and anti-Jews and his supporters have not a word of complaint. No big deal. Bernie Kerik? O.M.G! Outrage! Rudy’s the anti-Christ! Can you be anymore intellectually dishonest?

Rudy911 is selling us the idea that he’s the last great hope to combat Socialism by using ultra-Liberalism.
And Rudy has recommended this guy to run the National Security of the Nation during a time of War. His mental retardation needs to be pointed out.

Bracewell & Giuliani Firm Advises Cintra in First Privatization of Toll Road in Texas DALLAS (March 1, 2007) Bracewell & Giuliani LLP (Texas-based law firm with global connections) advised Cintra Concesiones de Infraestructuras de Transporte, S.A., a Spanish transportation company, in its successful bid to develop State Highway 121 into a toll road through Collin and Denton counties ("trade road" is four football fields wide). The award to Cintra, approved by the Texas Transportation Commission, is the first privatization of a Texas toll road. Bracewell is acting as project counsel to Cintra with respect to the 50-year concession from the Texas Department of Transportation. Cintra will pay a $2.1 billion upfront and annual lease payments totaling $700 million. "Cintra was awarded this project because of its proven expertise and competitive proposal," said Thomas O. Moore, partner with Bracewell & Giuliani. "This is the largest transportation deal of 2007. This is one of only five deals in the country." http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1803916/posts
kerik is a scumbag.......birds of a feather flock together......Giuliani can’t play dumb, he has acted the same way as kerik with his “businesses” since they both left office in NYC.
