Surfer Todd Endris needed a miracle. The shark — a monster great white that came out of nowhere — had hit him three times, peeling the skin off his back and mauling his right leg to the bone.
That’s when a pod of bottlenose dolphins intervened, forming a protective ring around Endris, allowing him to get to shore, where quick first aid provided by a friend saved his life.

Sentience isn't something that comes in grades like full, half empty, complete or partial.

I'd say a dolphin fits any of those description.

I don’t know how sentient/intelligent dolphins are, but God once used a jack*- the animal to literally talk to a man, as a warning!!!
Sentience and intelligence are two different things. I'm sure you are able to determine whether dolphins fit the three definitions of sentience listed above.

I have sometimes suspected this about dogs.
Frankly I don’t care; and I don’t equate them as ‘equal with human beings’, but I do believe we shouldn’t disreguard their life willy nilly...
Especially when there are other sources of food.
I love stories like this.
I remember once when I was a teenager we (me and a friend) walked/swam WAY out into the ocean at Surf City. It was a rare “two sandbar” day - - once you got all the way out to the first sandbar there was a second sandbar another 50 yards out, with waves breaking into it from the other side. (I hope you followed that.)
Anyway, we were out past that second sandbar, bobbing in the waves waiting for a wave to ride when a school of dolphins (maybe porpoises) went by us so close we could have reached out and touched them (if we weren’t peeing ourselves).
There was something cool about being in their “house” under completely natural circumstances.
We used to get whales under the boat & people would get all scared. Whales always amaze me too. We would be like 150 miles out & the whales would just act like we weren’t even there. Marlins jumping are awesome & beautiful too. I didn’t mind the blue fishing & tuna fishing. But I started to worry about over killing sharks. We would get guys out there that couldn’t eat a blue shark etc but felt the only good shark is a dead shark. So I would get into fights. Finally I said on our contract if its not going to be eaten we believe in catch & release. The fishing laws here really put us out of business with the limits on fish. Well it was fun most of the time while it lasted. Boats are holes in the water & we have a small one now for crabbing.
That would be stupid.
