A child cannot rationalize her statement about getting nothing back. But as an adult, we are supposed to do good deeds to get anything back. We do it for love, and we do it for others. If I was to donate to charity or adopt to make myself feel good, there is no point in doing it, because those who would benefit would not benefit. Only I would. Selfish people have no concept of what it is to be selfless.
