A Recipe For Republican Recovery
National Review Online ^ | November 7, 2007 | Jim Geraghty.

Gloom hangs over Republicans when they think of next year’s elections - but it shouldn’t. The sea change in political fortunes between 2004 and 2006 should not remind Righties only that the winds can change quickly - from a supportive breeze at your back, to a gale-force wind in your face - they should also be reminded that the political landscape can get better fast, too.

Next year could be a surprisingly good one for the GOP, though it’s clearly not guaranteed. The party will need good candidate recruitment, message discipline, a clear, unifying agenda, and a bit of good luck. But on a wide variety of fronts, there are pieces of good news that are overshadowed by the mainstream media’s preferred “Democratic-Tsunami Part Two” narrative.

Anyone who needs a little attitude boost should read this. A good analsys, and I especially liked the details about the House and Senate races. BTT.

Here’s a recipe for republican recovery: Nominate a conservative.

Yeah, elect the real conservatives that are for America and Americans.

Nomination of a conservative is simply not enough. The conservative HAS to be able to fluently communicate. People trash Mitt - rightly so perhaps - but he is probably the only one in the Republican field IMO that knows how to speak intelligently. Thompson is a bumbler with no passion for the job and looks old and washed up. Mitt is a slick flip-flopper. Giuliani & McCain - not worth talking about. The rest of the field just haven't done anything and don't seem to have any momentum.

We do not have a charismatic conservative that can speak well that has the momentum to win. If we do, I would love to learn of the name of this “Reagan” that’s out there waiting to be elected.

If I was in charge of the GOP, I could run a 12 year old and beat Hillary. The trick is to run a real conservative.

All these fake conservatives will have their records and past comments turned against them by teamHildebeast AND the Main Stream Media. How is it that Proposition 187 won in liberal California? Because the media had built itself up into so much of a frenzy against it (think of Dan Rather sticking with Fake But Accurate) that they started jumping the shark and middle class Californians could tell that they were wrong. If such a thing can happen here, and someone like Bill Sali can run as an unabashed conservative with a 30point deficit right up to election day and WIN BIG, then ANY real conservative could beat Hillary.

The GOP keeps sending in centrists to fight leftward for the center. Most of America is to the right of the MSM, let them be who they are.

The best, most unabashed, rock-ribbed conservative is Duncan Hunter. His plan could be to let the media be itself, let Hildabeast be herself, and Americans would have a clear choice.

There’s me, but I intend to sail off to the Azores, or PEI, for the global warming.

Well I don't share your view that Hillary is easily beatable. The dems are an organized machine. They were able to get a majority of people in this country to vote for Al Gore. Kerry almost got elected.

So picking a conservative is a good start but if the conservative is not able to communicate and connect with the masses then it goes nowhere. Hunter? NBC/Wall Street Journal poll I just went through shows him with about 1% of the vote. He just hasn't gotten any traction. The way the primaries work I don't see how he could possibly prevail. So it's kind of theoretical case to make for Hunter.

***Just like it’s a theoretical case for the 12 year old.

What do you think the MSM is going to do as soon as there is a republican nominee? Pick one, any one. It is a guaranteed certainty that they will go negative on him. ABC has NEVER written a positive story about GWB.

With that much weight pushing the wrestler towards you, you need to be able to use that weight against him. Going for the middle doesn’t work. Ask Bob Dole. Knowing that to be the case, we need to formulate a strategy that depends upon the media going out of their way to step on the republican.

You did not address the examples brought up: Prop 187 and Bill Sali.

So, let’s start with the 12yearOld conservativeNoName. The media immediately starts talking about how he doesn’t know nuthin’, he’s too young, he’s wrong on immigration, choice, taxes, War, a whole slew of things. Before the media even cued up on him you never even heard of this 12 year old. Now you know his positions on a whole slew of issues, without him spending one dime. Then the 12 year old starts debating, saying things like, “there you go again”. And pointing out how obvious and simple it is that the democrap is wrong. America notices, the media continues down its path of painting this 12yearOld as the incarnation of Hitler’s love child with Satan. Pretty soon, America starts realizing that the media is way off, that to call this 12yearold a bigot is to call America a bigot, and they vote accordingly. And the 12YearOldNoName that you never heard of, who polled less than 1% a year before the election, can win it just by deftly using the media and having genuine conservative positions. The strategy does NOT work with johnny-come-lately conservative positions nor nuanced “States Rights but ProLife” type of positions, nor flipflopped positions.

So try to process this. Get over the fact that someone has less than 1%. WE KNOW. It doesn’t mean what you think it means.

United, perhaps. But, the Party will have to learn to want to win and go with the guy the entire Party chooses via the primaries. Last night, the Dems won in Va. pulling that once Red State toward Purple-Blue step by step. If the Party splinters because they just won’t support Rudy, Fred, or Mitt, then the Dems will still have a field day. And all the blather bout RINO’s, being true to oneself will become bitter ashes after 8-12-16 years of Dem rule!

“he is probably the only one in the Republican field IMO that knows how to speak intelligently.”

Yes, Mitt Romney will make a very effective communicator for the Republican party.

“We do not have a charismatic conservative that can speak well that has the momentum to win. If we do, I would love to learn of the name of this “Reagan” that’s out there waiting to be elected.”

His name is Mitt Romney.

Actually adhering to the smaller, less intrusive government plank would be a great start.

Thompson appears to be losing ground and is nech and neck with Mitt now. Giuliani still leading but not by a large amount. Brokered convention?

Republican Candidates Democratic Candidates
11/08/07

Giuliani 23%
Thompson 15%
Romney 14%
McCain 12%
Huckabee 11%

Will all those FredHeads who claimed Romney was far behind Thompson now change their tune about national polls?

This is very good news for Romney. He is lining up to be the anti-Rudy, the man who saves us from Rudy getting nominated.

“I don’t think the Republican Party will choose a pro-choice, pro-gay civil union candidate to lead our party,” -Mitt Romney
