“It broke my heart to see Paul Weyrich endorse Romney.”

He just showed how much he was willing to sell his endorsement for.

I’m sure Rooty stuffed some cash in Pat’s pocket too.

I’m still voting for Fred and all Paul and Pat did was lower my opinion of their opinion.

Yeah, and that’s coming from Dobson, a professionally trained psychologist who has brought the false gospel of self-esteem into modern Christianity.

You’re tagline is ‘right on the mark’ for anyone who supports a liberal with a ‘train wreck’ of a personal life like Giuliani!!!

Never understood the value of these "endorsements" to us. I understand the value of them to the endorsers and "endorsees", but they are usually just quid pro quo, whether for financial or political or "celebrity" promotional reasons - so candidates can say "I was endorsed by ..." as a way to deflect and redirect the criticism of their position or questions about their record. I'd just ignore them, or better yet, dismiss them altogether and go with my own reasoning for why I support a candidate.

If anything, a "celebrity" endorsement (which is what most of them really are) could only backfire and turn me off from the candidate, never to start supporting or increase support for the candidate. Endorsements are political favors horse trading, not having anything to do with why other people should or should not vote for someone.

The rank and file here at this site is on the record as saying they would rather have Hillary for 8 years than have Giuliani.

I'm sure you meant "some of the rank and file..."

I like him a lot. I think there’s a lot to be said for the concept of federalism opposed to an out of control bloated socialist authoritarian nanny state central government. I understand most of our founding fathers were all for it (federalism). I’d kinda like to start moving that direction.

Yeah, I know. And I can’t reach the hem of Dobson’s garment from here either. I guess I’m just screwed.

I don’t understand why people aren’t screaming Duncan Hunter from the rooftops!!! This guy represents everything we profess to believe here on free republic and I see very little support for him... The only other candidate worth looking at is Mike Huckabee...

He’s saying the same thing many conservatives are saying here, that if an insufficiently conservative candidate is chosen, we should vote 3rd party or stay home.

We’re fine with that message if it’s directed against Rudy Giuliani, and in fact rididule those who say they’ll vote for Rudy in the general rather than go 3rd party.

Then we turn around and mock Dobson because he says the exact same thing, because the candidate HE doesn’t like is one of our preferred candidates.

Argue against his rejection of Fred, but it’s hypocritical to attack Dobson on the “any dim is worse than any republican” while living in a forum that explicitly says that “3rd party” is better than some republicans.

I think it self destructs if we let it by a lack of civil discourse among ourselves. Everyone should be treated as welcome if they want to be called part of the party. I also think it self destructs if we insist on such a high degree of “purity” on issues that we refuse to work with what we have. Look how long it took to finally tip the balance on smoking. The public is moving in the right direction on abortion. We need to not insist that it has to happen in one election cycle. Even if a candidate is not “pure” on an issue. The party can extract a promise. And the party can do to a president what the conservatives did to Bush on immigration if a president doesn’t keep a promise.
That is just my opinion. (And of course, living in California, Shwartznegger stretches my tolerance too far, so I understand if someone doesn’t agree with me on this.)

Wow, Robertson just lost all credibility as a leader of social conservatives. I can respect Dobson’s position (though I am not sure it is wisest to push a third party at this point but at least it is principled). And while I don’t like Weyrich’s choice at least he didn’t totally sell us out. But yikes Robertson’s age must really be catching up with him or something.

Yes, Robertson’s endorsement floored me as well - it has to be the “anyone but Hillary” thing going on, but this is a primary election, I think others could beat her in the general election as well.

I still maintain the nominee will be either Romney, Thompson, or, less likely, Huckabee, just because of the way the primaries are structured.

Because Fred Thompson is very close to Hunter in voting history, not as to the right, but the closest, however, Fred is polling within striking distance of Rudy and can take him down while Hunter’s best is in the low single digits. Even a small shift in Conservative votes could result in handing the primary to Rudy based on the ‘pop culture’ vote alone. With Fred, we have the combination of a conservative candidate who can also keep Rudy out.

I think Huck is probably a good guy, but with his immigration stand, you won’t see much rah rah for him here.

Yep. Once the party is in the mode of choosing “who can win” and a “savior”, party really needs saving because it already lost its soul and is well on the road to losing the elections as well.

Dobson is acting on principle - I can respect that whether or not I think it is the wisest course. But Robertson just stabbed us in the back by endorsing Guiliani. That I can neither respect or forgive. He is finished as a social conservative leader as far as I am concerned.
