Robertson to Back Giuliani By LIZ SIDOTI Associated Press Writer
MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) - Pat Robertson, a prominent Christian leader and social conservative, will endorse Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani, GOP officials confirmed Wednesday.
The former New York mayor backs abortion rights and gay rights, positions that put him in conflict with GOP orthodoxy, and has been trying to convince cultural conservatives to overlook their differences with him on those issues. That makes the support of a high-profile religious conservative like Robertson a particular boon.
Giuliani, the front-runner in national popularity polls, and Robertson will make the endorsement official later Wednesday at a news conference in Washington. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid publicly pre-empting the announcement.
The endorsement is a blow to rival Mitt Romney, who has been making inroads with the powerful network of social conservative leaders. Romney recently announced that Paul Weyrich and Bob Jones III were on board with his candidacy, and he had been seeking Robertson's support.
Robertson, who unsuccessfully ran for president in 1988, founded the Christian Broadcasting Network, the Christian Coalition and Regent University in Virginia Beach.
If we can count on Rudy to pick Supreme Court justices wisely, how is it that he seems to consistently choose wives that he later decides aren’t up to the job?
___________
I don’t care who you are, that’s funny.
How many never divorced presidents picked bad Supreme Court justices?
Attempting to compare wife pickin’ with Supreme Court justice pickin’ is Deliverance-style banjo pickin’.
I'd be okay with Giuliani as President, though happier with Romney. But Pat Robertson didn't have a shred of credibility left to fly out the window, so I seriously doubt that his endorsement will give any boost to Giuliani's chances, or be "a blow" to Romney's chances. It actually might hurt Giuliani by associating him with the extreme "religious right" in the minds of politically centrist voters who view both Giuliani and Hillary as acceptable options, but were leaning towards Giuliani because Hillary's dishonesty and big-spending tendencies worry them.
Well, so far as I know, Rudy didn't legally "marry" his boyfriend Bernard Kerik, but Kerik is another example of Rudy's impeccable judgement, right?
It's covers the same subject but from a different source.
Pat Robertson quotes:
In all fairness, there are some good ones:The 10 Stupidest Things Pat Robertson Ever Said
10) "Over 100 years, I think the gradual erosion of the consensus thats held our country together is probably more serious than a few bearded terrorists who fly into buildings." Pat Robertson, on the dangers of judicial activism
7) "I would warn Orlando that you're right in the way of some serious hurricanes, and I don't think I'd be waving those flags in God's face if I were you, This is not a message of hate -- this is a message of redemption. But a condition like this will bring about the destruction of your nation. It'll bring about terrorist bombs; it'll bring earthquakes, tornadoes, and possibly a meteor." Pat Robertson, on "gay days" at Disneyworld
6) "(T)he feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians." Pat Robertson
Heard that this morning. I was almost as shocked by that (considering Pat Robertson’s vehement pro-life stand compared to Giuliani’s unclear stand) as I was to find out that Bob Jones (the controversial pastor from Tennessee Temple) is backing Mitt Romney (a mormon.) Bob Jones is the guy that had a conniption about interracial dating/marriage, but he’s now backing someone who belongs to what most people in his line of work would say belongs to a cult? It makes NO sense. And Jay Sekulow was right there with him. Another big surprise to me.
But on the thread topic, as Laura Ingraham said, it seems that Robertson has put power over principles. Sad, actually.
Senility or sell-out?
BS, it’s nothing to do with war or border security or anything else. It’s a popularity contest plain and simple. What the hell does Rudy Guiliani know about war? He knows how to avoid one when called to serve, but besides that, what does he know?
He went against Pataki and endorsed the Democrat in the governors race and you think he won’t stab you in the back? You trust him? Those who hold your flawed perceptions are all that keep Rudy on top. Being a smarta$$ to an oil tick isn’t credibility on fighting war.
If you want to discuss illogical/non-factual arguments, I am here. I do agree that is the mistake many make in attacking Rudy from a purely socially conservative platform. He is so easily knocked down on that which so many wrongly believe to be his strongest issue. If national security and the WOT are your concern then that narrows it down to Hunter or McCain for you.
Hunter is by far the best but McCain has a good understanding of the issue, if one can trust him to apply it. Firstly, if the borders aren’t secure any national security we pretend to have is just us kidding ourselves. Rudy hasn’t a clue as to our military capabilities nor its limitations. He doesn’t understand what our military needs nor has he ever worked to get them what they need. As opposed to Hunter who understand all these thing very well. He has been there done that. Please, do not counter my argument by stating some numbers from a push poll. I don’t care about polls they are not my guide nor is there anything practical about them.
An American citizen who is awake, eyes wide open. God Bless Ya’.
I have a lot of respect for Pat Robertson. I believe it was the 700 Club where I heard the Gospel for the first time and accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord.
I am very suprised at this endorsement by Mr. Robertson and want to hear his reasoning behind this.
I’d also encourage those out there to not speak evil even in jesting about this man of God. The Lord has used him mightily for many years.
Lets hear what he has to say about this issue first before agreeing or disagreeing with him.
Here is what is so strange... Robertson is loathed by the far left, particularly the anti Christian, pro gay folks. But now, Robertson supports a candidate who has some appeal to that same group of people? Damn, I bet that is one confused group right now. I have faith that many on the religious right will see though this hoax of an endorsement and make up their own minds.
Fixed it.
I have a feeling that advertising time isn't the only think Romney's money is buying.
no kidding.
the implications of that thought just sicken me. I hope you understand when I say I hope you’re wrong. Ugh!
And FTR - I don’t particularly have anything against Rudy, I just think that this smacks of politics as usual which annoys the heck outta me.
Pat Robertson is now, and has always been, a fraud. He is merely a tool of the GOP Establishment.
I hope I’m wrong, too.
Huh??? Is he nuts? Pat Robertson now has no credibility (as if he ever did).
Sorry for the dupe thread but I DID do a search by the
headline and it did not come up. Maybe we posted it at the
same exact time or something. Search IS my friend but not
this time :)
The man most responsible for that was Police Chief Bill Bratton, who was dumped by Giuliani when he got his picture on the cover of Time in 1996. And Giuliani didn't talk to him again for ten years. Anyone who threatens Rudy's ego gets dumped, abandoned or otherwise disposed of.
So, what exactly did Rudy do on 9/11 that was so special? Lets look at what he did before 9/11 that was kinda special.
Mayor Giuliani sued all the way up to the Supreme Court to defend the citys sanctuary policy against a federal law stating that city employees could not be prohibited from cooperating with the INS. Oh yeah? sez Giuliani; just watch me. The INS, he claimed with what turned out to be grotesque irony, only aims to terrorize people. Though he lost in court, he remained defiant to the end.
On September 5, 2001, his handpicked charter-revision committee ruled that New York could still keep immigration information confidential to preserve trust between immigrants and government. Six days later, several visa-overstayers participated in the most devastating attack on our country in history.
Unclear stand? What's so unclear. You favor Roe vs. Wade as a precedent, you're pro-abortion. You favor the abortion industry by personally giving them $, you're pro-abortion. You favor a judicial bypass for teen-age minors to do an end run around parents, you're pro-abortion. You want to broaden embryonic stem cell research, strike four against the womb.
I was almost as shocked by that (considering Pat Robertsons vehement pro-life stand compared to Giulianis unclear stand) as I was to find out that Bob Jones (the controversial pastor from Tennessee Temple) is backing Mitt Romney (a mormon.) Bob Jones is the guy that had a conniption about interracial dating/marriage, but hes now backing someone who belongs to what most people in his line of work would say belongs to a cult? It makes NO sense. And Jay Sekulow was right there with him. Another big surprise to me.
Amen to this! (And I'm glad you've been among the few to highlight this) Lots of FREEPERS are riled up over this endorsement of Rudy but weren't over the endorsements you mentioned above of a candidate who thinks all us non-LDS church-goers are apostates of the faith, corrupt, and 100% creedally abominable. I mean, imagine if Rudy said that all pro-lifers were corrupt infidels whose beliefs stunk to the highest heaven?
