Poll finds 77% oppose licenses for illegals (Hill-Spitzergate)
The Washington Times ^ | November 5, 2007 | Stephen Dinan

Voters oppose driver's licenses for illegal aliens by a nearly five-to-one margin, a new Fox 5/Washington Times/Rasmussen Reports poll finds.

As immigration politics explode into the presidential race, polls show Americans are taking a hard line on benefits for illegal aliens, including opposing driver's licenses and such taxpayer-funded benefits as scholarships at state colleges for illegal-alien students.

The new poll found 77 percent of the adults surveyed opposed making driver's licenses available to illegal aliens, while just 16 percent supported the idea.

Licenses fared poorly across party lines, including near-blanket opposition among self-identified Republicans, at 88 percent. Among independents and Democrats, it was still overwhelmingly unpopular, drawing 75 percent and 68 percent opposition, respectively.

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer in September proposed adding New York to the list of seven states that offer licenses to illegal aliens, and the issue has refused to die down since.

Most Democratic presidential candidates have embraced the policy, including front-runner Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, arguing it's a matter of road safety and a valid response to the federal government's failure to give a path to citizenship to illegal aliens.

But those on the other side, including Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Christopher J. Dodd and the entire Republican presidential field, oppose the idea.

"I think we have to quit inducing people to come and stay if they're illegal," said former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, one of the Republican candidates.(continued)

No, even if 99 percent opposed this, that would not keep the individual from pining for HRC in 2008. HRC trumps everything in NYC and far beyond as well.

Things are looking better for 08. All democrats I know are frustrated with the illegal immigration problem. Iraq, supposedly the number one issue favoring democrats, should favor Republicans as the good news from Iraq eventually sinks in.

The 23% that agree with this are probably liberals or the illegals themselves.

I should change my name to Jose Cuervo from Tijuana. Free benefits, six ‘get out of jail free’ cards, and a license with no points...

Notice that Tim Russert never asked Fred Thompson about immigration yesterday on Meet The Press?

Erie County Clerk Kathleen Hochul says she'll follow Gov. Eliot Spitzer's directive to accept driver's license applications from illegal immigrants.

Then she'll follow the law, she said, and report the applicants to authorities for possible arrest and deportation. "We just don't want to be in any sense facilitating the furtherance of illegal activity, and that's really what we're being asked to do," Hochul said Thursday.

Let me be the first to nominate Kathleen Hochul as our next Republican NYS governor.

Yep, they've pushed the hot-button one too many times, and this issue is the one that will sink 'em. Hillary can whine all she wants about it being about 'piling on' and 'just because I'm a woman' all she wants, but this isn't going to go away as an issue ... this is a hugh and series issue amongst the American people, which can't be laughed off lightly by the Dems.

From what I’ve seen on the news these county clerks in New York state are pretty much in opposition to this scheme. In Tennessee, the state finally repealed licenses for illegals. The licenses created more problems than they solved, including a rise in hit-and-runs, a rise in uninsured motorist accidents, an increase in these IDs being used in check forgery and other scams. Finally after a series of fatal accidents involving illegals the state stopped issuing these licenses.

This is all about getting illegals on the voting roles.

Nothing else.

The Republicans should propose a counter measure, which requires all aliens to have a driver’s license that is stamped, non-citizen. The license should expire every six months and require proof of insurance at time of issue. Then it should be a felony to get in an accident or get a traffic violation without one, cause for deportation or a jail term.

Why all states should prohibit the issuance of drivers’ licenses and “driving certificates” to illegal aliens

If we cut their social benefits off one by one, they will evict themselves from our communities and our nation.

There is a real argument here for SELF DEPORTATION.
