The last Iowa coal was mined in about 1985. As you might guess, coal buyers want high BTUs, low ash, low sulfur and low slagging and fouling. Iowa coal is low BTU, high ash, high moisture and sulfur and will slag and foul. Typical fusion temperature of the ash is about 1950.
