Fred Thompson Aide Resigns Post After Drug-Dealing History Exposed
Fox News ^ | November 5, 2007

'08 candidate Fred Thompson said he didn't know his friend and campaign adviser had twice been busted for drugs. A close ally to Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson resigned his post Monday as a top campaign bundler, FOX News has learned, a day after his drug-dealing history was revealed.

Phil Martin, a businessman who has lent Thompson his Cessna to fly around the country, was one of four campaign co-chairman for the '08 Republican candidate. The Washington Post reported Sunday that Martin also posted a guilty plea in 1979 for selling 11 pounds of marijuana and a no contest plea in 1983 for cocaine trafficking and conspiracy.

"I have decided to resign my position as chair of 'First Day Founders' of 'The Friends of Fred Thompson'. The focus of this campaign should be on Fred Thompson's positions on the issues and his outstanding leadership ability, not on mistakes I made some 24 years ago. I deeply regret any embarrassment this has caused," Martin said in a statement.

Thompson said Sunday that he wishes he had known earlier that one of his key presidential campaign advisers pleaded guilty to drug charges but he still thinks Phil Martin is "a good man."

The Mittwitt short-bus riders are always anxious to post anti-Fred garbage.

It was impressive to see how Fred handled the news on Meet the Press yesterday, he did not get excited or throw the man under the bus.

“”Meet the Press transcript:

“MR. THOMPSON: Nobody’s made any accusations that he’s done anything illegal with regard to our campaign. Now, what, what I understand is, from, from, from reading this story and from, from third parties is that when, when, when Phil was in his 20s, 24 years ago or something like that, these things came about. I know that—I did not know about that. They were in Florida; I was in Tennessee. After this he moved to Tennessee. I know Phil is a good man. He is my friend. He is going to remain my friend. He didn’t go to jail, he got probation, he’s paid his debt to society and turned himself around and become a good, productive, successful citizen. And I’m going to have to take a look at it. I’m going to have to talk to Phil, make sure I understand the nature of the situation and figure out what the right thing is. I’m not going to throw my friend under the bus for something he did, you know, 25 years ago if he’s OK now. On the other hand, I’m running for president, I—I’ve got, you know, to, to do the right thing, you know, and problems occur, and I’ll just have to figure it out.”””

he did not get excited or throw the man under the bus.

No, he waited one day.

I wish Fred would have stood by his friend who was simply accused of committing minor crimes all so many decades ago.

Fred did it right, as opposed to the Mittster.

Romney's fake troopers sporting fake badges.

The Democrats sure talk a good game when it comes to ex-cons, even cons voting and their other rights. They’ll argue with you all day how unfair it is that the death penalty is an option for serial killers. They’ll argue with you all day about whether sex offenders should able to live across the street from elementary schools.

Then it comes to the subject of a man having plead guilty of crimes twenty four years ago, and all of a sudden, crime is a very big concern.

Let’s look at just one of Bill Clinton’s buds, Dan Lasiter. Dan was known to hang with Bill a lot. Dan was convicted of cocaine trafficking. Prior to that the Governor or Arkansas was known to have been partying with him on a regular basis. Bill’s brother Roger was also convicted for an infraction related to cocaine. What is troubling about this, is that Bill Clinton was known to party with both men while he was Governor of Arkansas. He was known to have been using cocaine during that period. I blieve he also pardoned Lasiter, if memory serves me well.

Now Fred is taken to task for an employee who was in trouble with the law a full decade before he knew him. And this is supposed to be important.

Never mind that it was never of any concern at all to the media that Bill (Sir SnortsAlot) Clinton had been a participant in the criminality of the men he was associated with. No big deal there. Move along...

The media just Borked an effective man on the Thompson team. Job done.

It sounds like the guy resigned on his own to me.

In my book that is a pretty classy act.

No, the point is that Fred’s campaign was attacked by the MSM do to an alleged minor crime committed by an insignificant staffer over 30 years ago.

I am not being silly. I am simply stating that this man may have committed a few minor crimes years ago and because of that the MSM attacks Fred to the point of where a resignation must takes place.

It was a which hunt plain and simple.

When are folks like this ever going to learn that when you associate with a high profile person, your past will find you out?

Geesh! What a dummy.
