This report belies the wisdom passed from on high that fences don't/won't work. Of course we all know they do work to varying degrees and that explains the delays and foot dragging on the part of ICE in constructing the fence.

We have 700 miles of border to secure.

Make that 2100 miles vice 700. The 2006 Fence Bill authorized 854 miles of double fencing.

“Fences don’t work” - but this proves different.

“Enforcement doesn’t work” - but towns where enforcement occurs complain that illegals are moving out and hurting business.

“Illegal immigration is not a political campaign issue” - you keep believing that too, and get ready for a real job, Congressman.

Baby steps. I’d like to see the fence built to cover all 2100 miles overnight, but at least some 400 miles is being built by the end of next year.

Progress. Slow, but progress.

Now build more!

build the rest of it now...and then build a second one behind it and put land mines in between so no tunnels can be dug!!!

Fences work. The problem is, lot’s of folks don’t want a solution that actually works.

Scratch somebody who advocates an “electronic fence”, and you will find somebody who really advocates unrestricted migration.

As the fences which are built prove themselves to be effective, it will be easier to build more fences. If we can maintain the political will, the entire border could be fenced fairly soon.

The next time somebody complains it is too expensive to fence the border, look at the thousands of miles of sound barriers that have been built alongside our nation’s interstate highways. These barriers serve no function at all, yet Billions of Dollars have be spent on their construction. If we can protect people who have built next to the highway from a little noise, we can protect our borders.

"The fence has destroyed the economy here," said Fabiola Cuellar, a hardware-store clerk on the main street of Palomas who used to sell supplies to the throngs heading north from here. "Things are going back to the way they were before."

Another crushing blow to the Mexican economic developmenbt program.

This isn’t just a few sticks and some barb wire ping!

Bush is on the spot alright, and he’s moving on it, too.

What people don’t ‘get’ is that it is a wizbang of a fence.

A fence is like a lock on a house. If the homeowner is there and willing to be unwelcoming to an uninvited guest, than a lock is useful. If the lock isn’t there, an uninvited guest might run in quickly, grab something and go, but will not be able to stay long. If the lock is there but the homeowner is passed out on the couch or otherwise unwilling/unable to keep the house secure, the lock doesn’t mean anything.

Most people here illegally didn’t walk here. They drove/flew/sailed in from 6 continents. Most came overtly. Many came on visas but then overstayed them. They find jobs and benefits to staying here as a result of our refusal to enforce our law.

Build the fence, but don’t let politicians pretend that it is anything close to a complete solution.

This report belies the wisdom passed from on high that fences don't/won't work.

The "Fences won't work" argument is of the same mindset that said "you can't deport them all", while hundreds, if not thousands were self-deporting just on the HINT of enforcement.

Remember the "There's too many of them" argument when discussing cracking down on the "squegee men" in NYC? Once the crackdown started, they literrally vanished overnight.

The liberals are so emasculated, they frantically search for ANY argument to avoid confrontation.

Yep, each type of fence is for specific installment in certain areas. As parts are complete, the area will have a complete turnaround. The illegals will have to move further and further out from the population areas to cross, and some of those areas are rougher to navigate and easier to control manpower-wise.

Build the fence, but don’t let politicians pretend that it is anything close to a complete solution.

A fence is only part of a solution to the elimination or reduction of illegal entry but it is a big part.

I think of a boat with many leaks, some large and some small.
Plugging the largest leaks will not stop all water leaking in but will probably keep the boat afloat.
Not plugging any leaks because you can't do them all guarantees the boat will sink.

The real problem is not the effectiveness of different measures like the fence or controlling visa overstays.
It is the desire of many (most?) politicians and bureaucrats to keep the flow of cheap labor and potential voters coming in.
They resent that they have been dragged screaming and kicking by voters to restrict illegal immigration and do so reluctantly and half heartedly.

I’ve seen pictures of Nogales, AZ where they’ve left all manner of trash and debris. And ranchers on the border in TX often find evidence of pilferage and even dead persons on their own private property.

“The liberals are so emasculated . . . “

Odd little castratos they are, that’s for sure: they are all in favor of “choice”, unless applied to schools and they believe government can do anything, except what they oppose: Iraq, border security, free enterprise, etc.

Recall what the lying Chertoff said? He stated something to the effect that nothing short of amnesty would relieve the pressure on the border.

Well, DUH! Of course fences work.

What our backsliding bureaucracy plans to do, is if forced to actually build the fence, however much they actually build, make NO effort to maintain it or police it. (and of course claim that there is no budget to do either.)
