O rend thy garments, America! Heap ashes upon thy head. We, the generation of generations--triumphant in our multitudes, invincible, indomitable, insufferable--have come into our inheritance. Hereby we claim our birthright. Give us all your money.
The pittance that is a current Social Security payment was intended to maintain the doddering retirees of yore in their accustomed condition of thin gruel and single-car garages. Such chump change will hardly suffice for today's vigorous sexagenarians intent on (among other things) vigorous sex, in places like Paris, St. Bart's, and Phuket.
How can present Social Security allotments be expected to fund our sky-diving, bungee-jumping, hang gliding and white-water rafting, our skiing, golf and scuba excursions, our photo safaris to Africa, bike tours of Tuscany and sojourns at Indian ashrams, our tennis clinics, spa treatments, gym memberships and personal fitness training, our luxury cruises to the Galapagos and Antarctica, the vacation homes in Hilton Head and Vail, the lap pools, Jacuzzis, and clay courts being built thereat and the his and hers Harley Davidsons?

Whewww! I missed that by month and a half. 2/15/65.
I’m sorry sir, but from your supremely ignorant words I can only conclude that you were not present during the Boomer growth years and therefore have no idea what you’re talking about. I’d love to see you raised as my parents raised my and my six siblings. Or many of the other Boomers I grew up with. Tough love was the order of the day. Parents and teachers spanked or hit misbehaving kids in those days and were not thrown in jail. Quit the boomer-bashing, and get a life.
“Quit the boomer-bashing, and get a life.”
I go by what I see. And what I see from you is a whining type reaction suitable for any liberal.
I was there during the boomer years, but I wasn’t stoned, and navel gazing like those around me. Your post misses the point on so many levels, I can only conclude that you didn’t want to debate, or exchange ideas, only whine.
Apparently the tough love didn’t do you any good.
“Im already stockpiling canned cat food for my retirement. China Mart has a special every month about a week before Social Security checks come out.”
Need some coupons? I got some time before retirement so don’t need to stock up yet.
Yeah. I like Fancy Feast and Sheeba.
Got you beat, Joe. Working 1/2 day at Luby's is a major part of my retirement plan: get me out of the house several times a week, and at least one good meal a day.
Retirement's the furthest thing from my mind, as my youngest started kindergarten this year (I'm 53). If he graduates from college at age 22, I'll be 70. With my other two kids in college, I'll have a 6-8 year window of opportunity to rebuild the savings.
I’m a few years older than you. My onliest is at the Air Force Academy. Woo Hoo - Free College!
That's pretty much my take as well, and I'm 37. My entire life I've always looked upon Social Security as nothing more than a tax, and not something I have owed to me in the future, and I really don't expect to get it. I'm saving as much money as I possibly can and trying to make prudent investments. I don't buy expensive cars I don't need, and I don't ever plan on buying a boat, joining a country club, or buying a vacation home somewhere I rarely spend time in.
The attitude of most of my Baby Boomer relatives, to be perfectly honest with you, sucks.
Actually boomers are from 1946-1955. After that is the Jonesers Generation to 1965, then the Gen Xers. Today’s 40-somethings don’t really share any of their cultural upbringing with someone in their 60s.
I'll extol to anyone the virtues of military academies and ROTC scholarships. The Army paid my way through Gonzaga, and I repaid it by serving the 4 year active duty requirement. Liked it so much, I stayed in for 8!
I am proud of the fact that my parents did not have to shell out a dime for my degree (I paid room and board through my ROTC stipend and summer jobs).
Hopefully, my youngest will attend college in the same fashion.
Postage stamps, stamps work too.
Bashing boomer's is a great sport and lots of fun but the bottom line is that it wasn't boomer's that voted in the two jerks that have done more in modern history to ruin this country; LBJ and FDR.
And boomer's are pretty much the first "generation" to pay into SS their entire lives. Certainly a great majority of the "greatest" generation did not pay into SS their whole lives and certainly they didn't do the same for Medicare, et al.
So declaring one generation the greatest and another the greediest is pretty thin gruel when the facts are considered.
The "greatest" generation has a lot to answer for. No boomer was ever able to vote for the socialist utopia they've given us.
Boomer's sure aren't responsible for the mess that the greatest created. They're just responsible for paying for the majority of it, at least so far.
There is no way that the boomer generation is going to be able to collect benefits equal to what today’s old coots are getting. It is simply not possible. The tax on working people would be prohibitive. There is no money socked away to pay these benefits. What boomers, who are in their earnings prime, are paying in now, is all going right out again to current recipients. Yes, it’s true that Gen X’ers and all others following will also be screwed by the system, but that applies to boomers as well. It doesn’t matter how strong of a voting block boomers are, the money is will not be there.
Ant, meet the grasshoppers as they comes for your stores of grain.
1940 was one of the best. In many ways, life was a lot better then, probably because everything we knew came via the dial plug-in radio complete with tubes, in the mail, was overheard while listening in on the 12 party telephone line or in weekly newspaper.

I never heard of the Jonesers. Is that like keeping up with?
My son is 43 and I am 63 and he and I share the same values and concepts and so does his girlfriend which makes it nice. I guess we are the odd couple.
You’re odd in a nice way. :-)
Gosh, you made me blush :)
I’ll be more than happy to debate you. If you were there during the fifties and sixties, where did you live?
And it was actually the parents of the greatest generation who passed all the socialist measures in the thirties. The greatest generation members wouldn't have been old enough. So the passing of and acceptance of socialist measures has been an ongoing process through at least four generations.
But the spume and nasty language coming out of the mouths of all the boomer bashers suggests to me that these people have issues that as a non-medical and psychiatric specialist I am unable to handle. . If someone wants to talk about people who defend social security and don't want it to change, they should talk with my greatest generation parents (both in their eighties) who believe social security is God's gift to America. I would bet most greatest generation members think the same way.
