I'm not too sure if it was the NFL's idea. Instead, it was NBC's, but they did it while under contract to broadcast an NFL property.
You should've seen what this same program---NBC's Football Night in America---did about a month ago: They made it Hispanic night, complete with Spanish versions of the team names whenever they showed the score.
Mea culps. My better half watched and was appalled by all the green crap. I just flatly refuse to watch SNF or much of anything on NBC. Far, far better things to do than watch Olberdork or Costas, like sorting sox.
I went into the room for a minute and saw a green peacock. Idiots. My earlier post merely reflected that a building in Philadelphia might go ‘green’ for the Eagles. And given the paltry audience for a halftime show, I’d bet most people in Philly, if they thought anything at all of it, figured it was to show team suport.
I may have decided that I will watch nothing else on NBC. Law & Order SVU was about all I was down to and after their liberal, anti-US in the Middle East show last week, I’m not in a big hurry to get back to them either. Oh, well. :(
The great thing is I don’t need to watch the nonsense...I can hear about the collapse here on FR.
Honestly, this season I haven’t watched one NFL game. Not one. And for me that is very strange. I used to watch every game I could, join fantasy leagues, really gave a damn about NFl football.
Maybe it’s age, or something. I can’t put my finger on it, but it no longer seems like home to me.
On the rare occasion I watch football anymore it’s College football instead. I don’t know what it is, the NBA-ing and thugging up of the NFL, the comical broadcasters who insult my intelligence, who knows, it’s just unwatchable anymore.I no longer care about any of the teams or players. Why waste three hours watching coke heads beat up on wife beaters while the announcers tell me George Bush sucks?
I’m pretty much done with the NFL and yet I can’t really even explain why. Very strange, just no longer holds any interest to me, just a general distaste and yet I used to be a rabid NFL fan up until a few years ago. I was one of their preferred demo, young middle class male who spent money on crap they promoted. But now, bleh...who needs it?
replying to myself...hehe
One other thing I noticed the last couple years in the NFL: The inundation of consumerism, marketing, advertising, etc in the games. It’s just too damn much. Sometimes I wonder if the commercial break ever started or ended.
In the last few years it seemed like every play had a Doritos tie-in, or a Tru-Value yardage recap, a lil banner announcing the new and improved battery, etc, the announcers were constantly plugging products, it was really just over the top. I know ya gotta pay the bills, but does every play need a sponsor and then a 5 minute commercial break? How do 4-15 minute quarters and a half time equal 4 hours? Let me watch the dang games once in a while...
That was a good line. I say we have to write that in a letter. For what it's worth, the Football Night in America message boards is quite normal, and anti-Olbermann.
...right on with that and that description extends far beyond NBC. Most of what comes over the cable now, sooner or later will devolve to pure bullshit.
If you think NBC is bad you should sample what NASCAR is putting out. What a bunch of raving, illiterate, idiots.
Thanks for the memories, that was a classic thread.;)
Same here. For a longtime Cowboys fan, the class and glory really ended when Jerry Jones came in and Tom Landry was so badly fired. And as for the overall NFL, the players jump from team to team, and there is so little cohesiveness.
It's not like the old days when the Steelers, for instance, had their great players that stayed all their careers playing for one team. And those old timers played for much less money; now the salaries are going through the roof, and yet it's hard for Mike Ditka to get current players to cough up money to help the poor disabled older football players that made the NFL the cash cow that it is today.
And the off-game drug use, rape charges, and just trash acting of so many (certainly not all) either never used to happen or was never reported as it is today.
Clinton/Gore were good for laughs.
Where are the polar bears when you need them? That was the stupidest thing I have ever witnessed!
