How Huckabee Could Rock the 2008 Vote
The Washington Post ^ | 11/4/2007 | Charles Mahtesian

Posted on 11/04/2007 4:11:53 PM PST by dano1

Huckabee is for real -- a man poised to go further on the national stage than any other candidate produced by the Christian conservative movement. Sure, some pundits still write him off, and back home, detractors insist that he's just angling for a plum Cabinet post. But you can spot an awfully convincing blueprint for how the candidate once tagged as "the hillbilly Ronald Reagan" could win the Republican nomination -- or end up as the inevitable vice presidential pick on a GOP ticket led by Rudy Giuliani. That's more than you can say for some of Huckabee's rivals.

(snip)

Huckabee's mere survival through Iowa and New Hampshire would suddenly become a huge political story. Coasting on media attention, Michigan's Jan. 15 GOP primary would become less important to Huckabee as the Republicans' attention turns to South Carolina's Jan. 19 primary: the preacher's chance to shine. While he has yet to win over politically pragmatic Christian conservative leaders who wonder about his electability and worry about his weak fundraising, it's hard to imagine them turning their backs on one of their own at the very moment when Huckabee will be closer to the Oval Office than any other Republican Southern Baptist in history.

Huckabee will move on to another good opportunity with Florida's contest 10 days later, then brace for the major primary payday on Feb. 5, when Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee and several other heavily Southern Baptist states cast their votes. When the dust settles on Feb. 6, carrying the South would let Huckabee have a one-on-one duel, possibly with Giuliani, that enables him to showcase his greatest asset: his personality. Could that take him all the way? The abrasive Giuliani, or any other finalist, would rule that out at his peril. (snip)

Those interested in Huckabee’s candidacy may wish to read this entire Washington Post article, which is extremely positive and upbeat about Huckabee’s chances.

This is the most surprising aspect of the 2008 campaign so far. Whether it’s a positive or negative depends on one’s viewpoint. Speaking for myself, I’m ambivalent about Huckabee, as are many conservatives.

I’m rather lukewarm on Huckabee, but I’d vote for him in a second against any one of the Dems.

The Washington Post and New York Times are Huckabee’s biggest proponents.

“The Washington Compost will print anything to help elect a democrat”

It’s a gushy, mushy piece of work, going to the extent of arguing away the importance of the Michigan primary.

Thompson’s got the smart folks, letting everyone else run around, saving the money for a tv ad/internet video blitz.

Huckabee is not a Reagan, he’s a George W. Bush. Another “compassionate conservative”, which means corporate conservative, giving more govt. money to private businesses under the rubric of charity. Huckabee is the wage-depression-money-lobby fantasy candidate.

Huckabee is for real -- a man poised to go further on the national stage than any other candidate produced by the Christian conservative movement.

Huckabee may be a Christian candidate, but he's no conservative.

He's weak on immigration and believes that the force of government should be used to control people's private behaviors. He also thinks that the money earned by private citizens is well spent by the government.

I do so wish that the press would be more careful with their usage of the word "conservative." If I didn't know better, I might be inclined to believe that they are deliberately misleading.

The two conservatives in the presidential race are Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter.

Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter are good men. It’s a pity that they’re not viable candidates.

No slams here, but what are the top 3 or 4 reasons you see Huck as preferable to the rest of the field?

The Huckabee website has a new "Truth Squad" alert re Huckabee's position on illegal immigration. IMHO, this is great since there has been a lot of false and misleading information floating around regarding this topic. Here is the statement from Huckabee's website:

Truth Squad: Immigration Facts

November 02, 2007

Immigration Facts

It has been reported that Mike Huckabee supported benefits for illegals immigrants while he was Governor of Arkansas.

Governor Huckabee never supported benefits for illegal immigrants. In Arkansas, illegal immigrants do not receive welfare benefits or food stamps. Governor Huckabee has always, and will always be supportive of the laws and regulations of the country.

It has also been said that Mike Huckabee was in favor of providing college scholarships for illegal immigrants while he was Governor.

The governor only supported the measure that applied to those who met the academic qualifications and applied for legal citizenship. The measure didn't pass. Governor Huckabee stressed that any student would simply be treated as any other graduate of an Arkansas High School, and not given any special consideration.

Critics say that Governor Huckabee's motives behind opening a Mexican consulate office in Little Rock was to court illegals to come work in Arkansas.

The Mexican consulate provided Arkansas businesses with access to Mexico and opportunities to expand their markets, and would help further ensure that immigrants from Mexico are legal and better able to secure legal documentation. At the same time, the office would open up opportunities for Mexican investors to invest money with Arkansas partners, which would help create more jobs in the state.

This is upbeat information about Huckabee. I’ve disliked him for rumors that he’s pro illegals. I haven’t paid enough attention to him because of this.
