Fred Thompson says "No" to Human Life Amendment
CBNnews.com ^ | November 4, 2007 | David Brody

Fred Thompson told Tim Russert on NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday that he DOES NOT support a Human Life amendment. That position is part of the GOP platform. Here’s what the 2004 GOP platform says:

"We must keep our pledge to the first guarantee of the Declaration of Independence. That is why we say the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and we endorse legislation to make it clear that the 14th Amendment's protections apply to unborn children. Our purpose is to have legislative and judicial protection of that right against those who perform abortions." Here’s what Thompson said about it lifted from today’s Meet The Press transcript:

MR. RUSSERT: Let me ask you about an issue very important in your party’s primary process, and that’s abortion.

MR. THOMPSON: Mm-hmm.

MR. RUSSERT: This is the 2004 Republican Party platform, and here it is: “We say the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution,” “we endorse legislation to make it clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to unborn children. Our purpose is to have legislative and judicial protection of that right against those who perform abortions.” Could you run as a candidate on that platform, promising a human life amendment banning all abortions?

MR. THOMPSON: No.

MR. RUSSERT: You would not?

Thompson was for killing Terri Schiavo until he got the NRTL endorsement. THEN, he said he would support the parents but the caveat is in the end, "the courts would decide." The next Terri would end up dead too. Thompson's team has RINOS in it. They were fully engaged in bumping Terri off. Judge Greer is a powerful republican with wealthy GOP donors egging him on to make sure Terri was starved and dehydrated. Fred Thompson said he would bump her off.

Then he started flip flopping and well, he's the only candidate that is getting trounced regarding Terri Schiavo. I can't vote for someone so misinformed and willing to let courts decide when the courts may be corrupt to the core.

Thompson is a pretender, Hunter is the real thing.

Yes, I concur. Duncan Hunter hasn't had to flip flop. He has no handlers messing him up...

Mitt Romney as governor, saved a child’s life from being turned into organs for harvest. Haleigh Poutre was beat up by her dad, turned over to foster care and they were going to kill her. She’s 10 or 11 now.

Mitt Romney as governor, saved a child’s life from being turned into organs for harvest...

You are right! I hadn't seen that before. He was petitioned by the organization started by Terri Schiavo's family:

Excerpt from www.ignatius.com - Catholic World Report:

Have you had some notable successes?

Schindler: Some cases you hear about in the media. But most others happen silently, with nobody knowing.

One little girl who was going to be starved to death is Haleigh Poutre—an 11-year-old from Massachusetts who was allegedly beaten into a coma by her stepfather. She suffered severe brain damage, and some members of her family were ready to “give up on her” and end her life. In fact, Haleigh was in danger of having her food and hydration removed by court order when the Foundation acted.

We petitioned Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney to have his state de-classify food and water as “medical treatment” or “artificial life support” (as long as a person can safely receive them). We also demanded they increase the standard of evidence required so that ordinary care is not denied those who may have no written directive or medical proxy. Too often, the courts rush to kill someone who can easily live if they just have food and water.

And her life was saved?

Schindler: Yes, Haleigh Poutre was saved and last I heard was that she was improving, and even began speaking this past June. She has been receiving physical, speech and occupational therapy since January at Franciscan Hospital for Children in Brighton.

Mitt Romney saved Haleigh!

I remember reading Haleigh's story! This is a good one for Mitt!

"We petitioned Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney to have his state de-classify food and water as “medical treatment” or “artificial life support” (as long as a person can safely receive them). We also demanded they increase the standard of evidence required so that ordinary care is not denied those who may have no written directive or medical proxy. Too often, the courts rush to kill someone who can easily live if they just have food and water."

I am assuming Mitt was successful with both of the above. He did in Mass. what Jeb was unable to do in Florida. Credit should also go to the Schindler's, God Bless them! : )

"It’s important now because NRTL endorsed Fred subsequently to his awful interview on Meet the Press and what were NRTL thinking???"

Agreed. What were they thinking especially after that interview?

"John Roberts said that the landmark 1973 ruling legalizing abortion was “settled as a precedent of the court”."

I'm willing to bet he said that with his fingers crossed.

Are you saying he is lying (fingers crossed) about lying (agrees that issue is permanent case law)?

Lemme figure that one out. If he is lying about believing that it is case law, then that means he will help change it. But he had is fingers crossed, so that means he was lying about changing it and lying about crossing his fingers and will view it as established law.

Did I get that right?

I don’t think he’s lying, you do. So explain it to yourself.

We have chronicled the plight of Haleigh Poutre from the beginning on our Terri Daily threads and do updates whenever news appears, usually from "The Republican" which is in the forefront.

We have also chronicled the original gaffe of Fred Thompson and media reaction from the beginning with predictions that it would stick. This can also be found in Terri Dailies, posted regularly from the beginning as "Fred and Terri tar baby dailies."

A blogger links to Terri's flash movie.

Comments on "Fred Thompson on Terri Schiavo"

Tim (MN) said ... (10:51 PM) : The Terri Schiavo case was a national issue. You'd have to be living on a cave to not remeber at least something about it.

I disagree that Congress did the wrong thing and "overstepped". I think they did the right thing by standing up for Terri who was not in a vegetative state look at the video at this link and tell me if she is in a vegetative state.

Check this out.

Thompson Can't Remember Details of Terri Schiavo Case. Thompson said he couldn't remember much about the Terri Schiavo case, saying "That's going back in history. I don't remember the details of it," but failed to mention he was in a Law & Order episode "ripped from those headlines" and discussed the case while sheparding John Roberts through his Supreme Court confirmation hearings. PROGRAMMING NOTE: Fred Thompson to be on Fox News Sunday on 11-25. Should be interesting. I wonder what his position will be now... Maybe Chris Wallace will give Fred a break and not mention Terri Schiavo.

rest assured Fred won't say what he told Tim Russert on Nov. 4 which was pro-euthanasia. He switched after NRTL endorsed and tried to rehab him. Unfortunately for NRTL, they are experiencing a backlash by other pro-life and conservative groups for endorsing him.

Say no to Frederalism. Say yes to civil rights, not states' rights.

I wrote a handwritten note to Chris Wallace, to have Duncan Hunter on his show as a guest, and I attached my published “letter to the editor” with the newspaper’s logo to give Wallace more information about Duncan Hunter.

You can print out a letter to Chris Wallace here:

Chris Wallace

I hope some of the Duncan Hunter suporters will join me in writing to Chris Wallace (or the tv personality of your choice).

This is about the Human Life Amendment. You said Fred would not sign the Human Life Protection Act. They are, I presume, two different things.

In any event, as President, Fred would have no role in amending the constitution.
