.. and then when it comes to building more nuke power plants or drilling for readily available natural gas and oil here.. well, how dare we? (envirotwits are hypocrites)

OH, and did I forget to mention.. LNG? and consistent blockages of any LNG project pretty much anywhere on the east or west coast.

Some here in Fairbanks still run a coal stove on cold days and it stands out powerfully. Most have made other arrangements to avoid the embarassment of emitting that sweet aroma all over the hillside and a mile away down the valley. There are worse things. Wood is best.

I need to get a load of wood ,, and burn it while we still can here in the bay area.

Use of wood stoves has been banned inside Fairbanks on the bad cold days when the inversion traps the air for weeks at a time. Oddly, the City power plant, and the University and Fort Wainwright burn coal and it seems very cleanly so you can’t smell it although ice fog sometimes happens on the Richardson Hwy past Fort Wainwright when it is 40 below or colder, which is fairly often still in the day of Global Warming.

There are many of these proposed and some apporved. Some are actually not in the south. It will give us something to do with the NG pumped back into the ground because poli’s block an NG pipeline from up north.

The PRIMARY problem with coal use is using it with old technology. The newer fluidized bed type are MUCH cleaner.

The way China burns coal, i.e. with no pollution controls whatsoever, of course it is dirty. But what a lot of people don’t know is that Vanderbilt University has a coal fired power plant ON CAMPUS right in the middle of Nashville. The scrubbers and emissions controls work so well that few people even know it.

Even 20 years the City power plant put out fly ash all overr everything a mile in every direction and when they blew out the stack it was amazing the stuff that came out. Now nothing comes out but a white or clear smoke visible only on cold days from the steam content.

I'm so glad you mention Nashville. The description of China reminds me of America when I was a kid. Nashville was a soot-filled city. You couldn't see your hand in front of your face for the coal dust/soot. Your face would be black after being outside for awhile. It was difficult to breathe. China is just coming into her industrial period. Given the same amount of time the U.S. had, she will learn how important it is to clean up the air and water. People will survive. We did.

Now I live surrounded by coal-fired power plants (4 of them) and the air is clear. Clean technology is available for all coal-burning, but it's expensive. One of our plants is building on a coal-liquification plant. That is a huge economic boost to our county.

As countries grow wealthier, clean air becomes both more important and easier to achieve. Like Britain and the U.S., China will clean up its act, in time.

There is no better pollution control than wealth.

Spokane, Washington, has long had regulations limiting the use of wood-burning home heaters, dut to the occurrence of temperature inversions and the city being situated in a sort of a valley. At times wood burning is prohibited; at other times the city is patrolled by “inspectors” on the lookout for wood stoves emitting too-visible or too darkly colored smoke.

Fairbanks went for the woodstove ban just in time for the runup of price in heating oil, which is the only alternative aside from all-electric. Fortunately for some, 2/3 the population lives outside city limits so when it gets 40 below we can do something about it besides call the truck for another $1500 worth of oil.

I understand that Alaska has 3 billion tons of anthracite coal- the coal that burns with a blue flame like natural gas and has very little sulfur content. That sickly sweet smell says that they're burning soft coal in Fairbanks.

It could be a long time before China cleans up the mess from their coal-fired power plants. They are currently building one new coal-fired power plant every week to ten days.

Bookmarked.

AGW & liberals = they don’t dare complain about (Communist, atheist) Red China opposing and persecuting Christians (more that they almost praise it for that!) but they are at last only beginning to complain about its pollution!
